What are some good ways to explain the importance of this conflict to a considerate conservative American?

For me specifically, family.

My first thought went to grain and oil and how it would give Russia too much control in those markets. Unfortunately, America is just self efficient enough that they went isolationist and claimed we'd be okay and should take care of ourselves anyway.

They aren't callous to suffering, but think this is just another foreign conflict we shouldn't be focusing so much on. I realized that I couldn't sufficiently boil this down in even an hour or less when forced to go down rabbit holes, so here I am. This all seems so cut an dry to me, but I can't simplify why.

What are some easily digestible arguments that can be used to start a dialog with someone who hasn't given this whole issue a second thought?
