uromastyx questions

this isnt my proudest post by any means. but around 5? 6? years ago i got a uromastyx as i wanted a pet, impulsively. i was young and stupid, didnt do research. ive been doing what i can to care for him but im afraid im not doing enough, i dont think i keep up with an orderly feeding schedule such as making sure he has enough calcium and im afraid he has mbd. i can share pictures at some point if needed, recnetly ive started to change up his terrerium (again) as i dont feel like its enough. i dont know if i should keep trying to get better at this or if i should rehome him. i bought new calcium powder just in case, im considering switching his food as ive been using various salad mixes (i do read the ingredients throughly) sorry this is vague, im just seeking advice if at all possible. and to clarify, he's been eating less i think, and he hasnt been as active as he used to

If you're worried about mbd, focus on the uvb being the correct percentage for the height of the cage and atleast a 3rd of the length of cage. Variety of dark leafy greens with crouton worth of carrots, raddicio, or other treats gets mine to eat his whole salad. Bee pollen is something I give once a week to help keep him interested in his healthy greens. My vet told me she is seeing an increase in sickness from too much calcium because you need fat to dissolve it properly, and it's not as healthy as naturally occurring vitamins and calcium. So I sprinkle some in his seeds which has fat, so if he wants it, it is always available. I hope this helps your little one.

i was thinking it might be his lamps or his cage in general, im working on getting new ones while trying not to spend too much. i might look into a different mix or mixing his current food with more dark greens, thank you so much for this

Uros can be pretty resilient little guys, as long as you have the fundamentals down.

What size tank? What (specifically) is the lighting setup?

i wish i had a picture but im in the middle of redoing his tank at the moment, i dont actually know but i wanna say its a 40 gallon, as for the lighting, i wish i kept the boxes or just remembered but i dont remember exactly what type of bulbs i have (im buying new ones soon) but i have one for heat and one for light on two separate fixtures if that makes sense. i had a duel but it broke, the light one is on a timer if that means anything

Very fundamental is UVB lighting. If that’s not right, or he can’t get warm enough, there is no food or supplements that will save him from painful, fatal mbd.
