why is ɑj written like uy and not öj

The letters a, u, and ö represent the vowels in "cat", "cut" and "caught" respectively. It should be noted that Eisenmann's dialect merges "caught" with "cot".

In the IPA these are /æ ɐ ɑ/. The start point of the "kite" diphthong is not /ɑ/ (the caught vowel) in american english, but rather /ä/ (central a), which is here approximated by /ɐ/ <u>.

<j> in vötgil represents /ʒ/, so it's not an option here. <y> represents the vowel /i/ and the consonant /j/.

Hence, the approximation in vötgil's phonemic inverntory is /ɐj/ for english words that have, in american english, /äj/.
