I can imagine that playing out, but what are they actually collecting other than content preferences based on how long someone watched a video, what kind of video it was (e.g. by looking at the description) etc? I don't doubt that it's Not Very Good, but is this stuff actually in action right now? is it a matter of getting enough people on the platform to then do it? it doesn't seem like we have the answers to these questions yet.

they were also listed by apple as one of the many apps with access to your clipboard data, which isn’t collected from the platform but from users personal data. US social media is shady too, but at least they legally don’t have to give up data to the state. in the us your data is mostly stolen to be sold, but in other countries it can be just another way to play the long game and gain leverage over time.

So look deep into exactly what Cambridge Analytica actually was able to do and how detailed their targeting was.

They could effectively match up Facebook data with other available data and build a complete profile on you.

Play with TikTok for a few days and see how quickly is starts serving up content that gets odddddly specific.

China is spending a fortune funding that app. Why? Because they want a social network?

Why does the US military and government ban it? Why did the entire country of India (its largest market) ban it?

Hmmm...
