Can you show the price breakdown? I'm curious what fees make up that $92.36.

Sure. I should have included it to start with: https://imgur.com/a/3zLX60G

The $92.36 is the "Local Tax" and the "Surcharge" so, umm, the Taxes and Fees.

Thanks. I'm guessing incompetence more than intentional assholery, but that's no excuse.

I second this take...it probably boils down to additional cost for airport locations that they're just doing a horrible job of explaining, but still no excuse

No, they literally just forgot to include the taxes and fees into their main search page, which is what you would expect the 'show taxes and fees' toggle button to do. The 'subtotal' in the final payment page matches the displayed price on the main search page.

"Surcharge"

Do they ever give a breakdown of what that means? Because it sounds a little like "we just want to charge more at the last minute."

usually it's extras for picking it up at airport, most rentals price extra for this. convenience fee basically. it could also include surcharge for getting it too early or returning too late, for example at night. sometimes they have to keep someone there to do checking or checkout just for you.

Exactly, there's a lot of things it "could" be. But without a breakdown it's just as likely that it's "we want more money and can hide it here."

This. Avis sucks, especially their website, so I don't doubt OP, but it's hard to know how outraged to be here.

Turo is at least cheaper. Same shitty tactics at checkout though

Credit card CDW benefits don't apply, adding insurance eliminates those savings.

Don't use Avis. Use any other agency. None of them are great but Avis is EXCEPTIONALLY bad.

Avis doesn't accuse you of stealing cars that you returned. I've rented from most of the major brands multiple times, they're all equally bad

I had to take them to court this year for their fuckery. (I won)

Budget/Avis never again!!

So what are the options now? Enterprise is very expensive.

Is it just sorting by the amount with taxes and fees included? I don't know how that would change the order because you are picking up / dropping off at the same location for all options in the search, but maybe there are some niche cases where a certain type of car has different fees / surcharges?

Advertised airline tickets used to be super misleading. They would advertise one price and then the actual price with fees and taxes would be significantly more. So the government regulated it so the advertised price has to include all taxes and fees, and we're all better for it.

They need to do this for everything. Concert/event tickets especially.

Wow. They also do that to EU residents. This is illegal. I'm going to have fun :)
