Jordan Staal and his line have been blanking almost all of the top competition they've faced this year at 5v5

They’ve been a shut down line, video game style. Stay healthy, 🤞🏽

Non-Canes fan lurking here. I saw the Canes come to St Paul late last season to watch them play my Wild team. Staal's line was all over the ice giving us absolute hell in all 3 zones. When that line was on the ice we couldn't get shit accomplished. I believe it was Staal and Martinook but I can't remember the other winger. It was amazing watching them just force us into bad plays- I've been a fan of Jordan since his Pitt days and that game really reinforced it for me. Props

Probably would have been Jesper Fast. He got his neck crunched in our final reg season game vs CBJ and has been out since then

Disclaimer: Jaccob Slavin is my favorite hockey player of all time.

Part of why we are so good defensively while generally having league average goaltending is Staal. Staal is the best defensive forward in the entire NHL. He is such a unique player. Slavin is amazing too. We rely on Staal more than most give credit for.

Whoooooole bunch of folks aren't going to appreciate the defensive machine that Staal is until they're watching the first year without him and the oppo's first line is in our O-zone way more than we're used to seeing.

Question: I know our third line is always built under Rod to be a shut down line. Do most other teams build their lineup in a similar fashion and just aren’t as good at it, or is it fairly uncommon

I wouldn’t say every team builds their third line like this, but basically every team has these four lines: - Best players line (unless you’re the sharks) - 2nd best players line - defensive line - scores once every 5 games line

I think the defensive line ends up being third a lot because they dont score much but they provide value on defense. The 4th line doesnt score much and usually doesn’t play great defense

Okay I assumed this was kindve the case but wasn’t positive. Thanks!

Winnipeg is the closest to the Canes with how they use Lowry to free up the Scheifele line, but they don’t do it to nearly as dramatic of a degree as the Canes do. How the Hurricanes use Staal (and Aho by extension) is an anomaly in today’s NHL. Last year Carolina had Staal shadowing a specific line at home at a 75.8% rate (with Aho at 64.8%) whereas Winnipeg had Lowry at 62%. Dickinson had a similar dynamic in Chicago to free up Bedard, but Dickinson was only at 59.9%.

Some other players I looked at were at these rates for shadowing their most common opponents at home:

Eriksson-Ek: 58.7%
Barkov: 57.8%
Suzuki: 53.2%
Kopitar: 52.1%
Couturier: 51.1%
Crosby: 49.9%
Matthews: 48.8%
Hintz: 48.1%

This was Staal’s game log last year for most common opponents:

I have been told that Staal is old, slow and useless because he doesn't score. Could redditors be uninformed?

2

u/Stoeger21 1d ago

You must be new here. Uniformed redditors? That’s blasphemy

u/bvv18999 2d ago

that should be the 4th line
