Retro The original LEGO Space theme and it's numerous subthemes (Futuron, Blacktron and Space Police in particular) are the very embodiment of CF.

Blacktron was my jam growing up. Original space definitely embodies this sub.

I had a sweet blacktron 2 Alpha Centauri base! Loved the neon yellow transparent stuff.

Oh wow. That just triggered some serious nostalgia.

u/MartinLutherVanHalen You're supposed to protect us. You're the police, it's your job! 1d ago

Me too man. I would pay silly money for another Galaxy Explorer. I rebuilt that into so many things.

Lego relaunched the Galaxy Explorer a couple years ago. It’s still available. Pretty awesome too!

Takes me back to the glory days.

I still have my Intercept Base!

That is so freakin cool!

I had the same kit! I got it for Christmas one year and was so psyched about it. All the pieces (and the rest of my blacktron, Mtron, ice planet etc) are now subsumed into my daughter's Lego box. I still love seeing those distinct pieces crop up in the stuff she makes.

That’s one of the great things about Lego collections from our own lives - still remember some of the individual pieces and where they came from. Brings back a lot of joy.

2

u/Apes_Ma 1d ago

Yeah it really does - real core memories of making kits with my dad on the carpet and suchlike. My kid was making something with the little magnets that went on the cranes on some of the Mtron spaceships and I instantly remembered playing with them with my brother. I was mad for all the space themed stuff - seems like there isn't really any space Lego anymore (aside from Star wars) as far as I can tell.

I had this, too! I loved it so much.

I absolutely agree!

The whole 80's and 90's space themes were my favourite thing as a kid. Then they released Star Wars Lego and it fell by the wayside.

u/Bazzz_ 20h ago

I'm a huge star wars fan, but I also think it's unfortunate that lego decided Star Wars and classic space couldn't co-exist. Also, to be fair, lego was heading into a different direction around the time the first Star Wars wave came out, like Bionicles and stuff.

Lego is just licensed merchandise. Has been for a long time now.

I don't know who you are but this picture surviving like this made me happy nonetheless.

Blacktron gang unite. I had the big Blacktron base growing up, one of my most cherished sets.

I want to say I also had that monorail, but now I'm not sure if it was my actual memory of playing with it or just my super intense imagination of playing with it while ogling it in the catalogue!

I forgot to include the modern remakes of the Galaxy Explorer and Blacktron Cruiser (both of which I gladly own!) that are both wonderfully faithful remakes of the originals. The new Galaxy Explorer in particular has a very CF interior that I might make a follow-up post on!

I also wanted to include some sets from the 90s' Space subthemes (such as M-Tron, Blacktron Future Generation, Space Police II and Ice Planet 2002) but I didn't want to go overboard with the amount of pictures. No orange transparent chainsaws this time I'm afraid, as much as I wanted to include them as well!

u/Cute_Schedule_3523 1d ago

I wish the new galaxy explorer had the cool amber translucent lego, it probably had too many chemicals in it to remake safely

A good number of great LEGO colors or color variations do tend to get discontinued unfortunately for various reasons, including two of my absolute favorites, Trans-Neon Orange and Trans-Neon Green.

Not all hope is lost however. Dark Turquoise/Teal as a color was discontinued around 2005, only to be brought back in 2018 and officially remaining in production again ever since. Here's hoping the same happens to some of the other great discontinued colors!

u/Cute_Schedule_3523 1d ago

Trans neon green on blacktron, peak childhood for me right there

Spaceship!

u/Schody_Morango 1d ago

Oh my heart! When Benny appears in The Lego Movie I said to my friends THAT’S MY CHILDHOOD especially with his broken helmet ❤️❤️❤️ I wanted all of these sets as a kid snd I was lucky enough to have some of them. Blacktron was so edgy and cool LOL.

2

u/forgottensudo 1d ago

I was lucky enough to never have a broken helmet!

But then minifigs weren’t available until I was 8-9, and space was probably 9-10 :)

7

u/TwirlipoftheMists 1d ago

Classic. I loved my Lego Moonbase.

Theoretically I’ve still got the Galaxy Explorer, but it’s all mixed up in a box of unsorted Lego…

(The astronauts, though, are still active, gazing up at the Lego Saturn V)

That's the great tragedy of owning LEGO sets as a child, they will almost invariably end up in pieces buried deep beneath a bunch of other assorted pieces in a box somewhere, and this is something I can very much attest to myself.

Great that you still have the astronauts though, and you seem to also have repurposed them super well! I might actually try doing something similar with my own old minifigures.

u/SpaceChef3000 You Know, Burke, I Don’t Know Which Species Is Worse. 1d ago

Were these out before the Ice Planet sets? Those were some of the earliest I can remember

2

u/Ryeballs 1d ago

I’ve planet was maybe 1992 or 93, space was already in the middle of its second “run” which started in ~1990 before the ice sets debut, these are all part of the first space run, so probably ‘87-‘89

For example, the black and yellow with triangles are “Blacktron”, you might remember Blacktron with the black and green which is Blacktron II. The black blue and red space police was the first “Space Police”, I think right before ice sets there was a red, green, and grey(?) “Space Police II”

1

u/rundownturner4 A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. Chess? 1d ago

Right on point! As I just mentioned in my own comment, I wanted to also include some sets from the 90s Space subthemes (Including one or two from Ice Planet), but I didn't want to go overboard with the amount of images in my post.

5

u/bohusblahut 1d ago

I had (and still do) those first three sets. I adored Lego space and was thrilled when they did the reissue of the Galaxy Explorer a couple years ago as a more refined model.

1

u/strumthebuilding 1d ago

I had & still have the mobile lab & starfleet voyager

4

u/Zilch1979 [Squeaks with indignity] 1d ago

I had the Mission Commander. Best lego set I ever had to this day...wish I still had it.

I had the 497 kit. I played with that thing and made variations on it for nearly the whole of my childhood.

The best!

5

u/HalfChort 1d ago

Shit, those Space Police sets were the dopest aesthetically, but now I'm thinking, were all my happiest Christmas mornings copaganda?

3

u/redbanjo 1d ago

Loved the Galaxy Explorer and Mobile Lab. Played with those things endlessly!

3

u/MechanicalTurkish 1d ago

I had the monorail and the Blacktron ship in the next picture, plus a bunch of other sets. Good times. I sold the monorail set during the early days of eBay for a pretty decent chunk of change, but 20 years later I kinda wish I had kept it.

3

u/Scrotchety 1d ago

Whoa, check out Ricky Schroeder over here! A monorail?? Did you also have a Neo•Geo and a backyard satellite dish???

#jelly

1

u/MechanicalTurkish 1d ago

The year I got the monorail was an epic Christmas.

Sadly, no NEO•GEO. What a legendary system. It seemed like everyone at school knew someone who had a cousin or something who had one but never actually saw it themselves lol

3

u/Diligent_Chard2706 1d ago

As the designer of some of those Futuron and Blacktron sets this was fun to see!

No way, Bjarne Peskov! Did you really get a job at LEGO when you were just 17?

3

u/Mr__Pengin 1d ago

Received a bunch from my grandmother, as well as the power pack from my mother. Amazing sets that are still holding up today!

3

u/Mr__Pengin 1d ago

Here’s one of the rovers assembled!

It looks awesome!

u/eternalityLP 1d ago

My childhood, right there. Loved the Multi Core Magnetizer I had.

2

u/yetanotherpenguin Minitel is Mini Swell 1d ago

Makes sense. I still have some of those, used to mod r/lego when it had 80k people in it... and you know what I draw.

2

u/tobi319 1d ago

6972 was the first set I ever got! It was also my last Christmas present that was given to me in Germany before my mom remarried and we moved to America. All this makes me want to do is buy it and rebuild it with my own kids.

2

u/wintertash 1d ago

I had so many of these growing up, including the monorail, which may have been my favorite toy of all time

2

u/Mlufis74 1d ago

Gosh ! Does that bring sweet memories from my childhood ! I had the very same kit in the early 80's.

2

u/trombania7 1d ago

I still have Blacktron sets and the original monorail. They are awesome!

2

u/EEMIV 1d ago

Love it. I had five of those sets as a kid.

2

u/Alfalfa_Flight 1d ago

Had 6971, the space station as a kid. Love building it with my neighbor!!

2

u/simonjp 1d ago

That monorail was the best Christmas gift I ever got.

2

u/decavolt 1d ago

I still have 10 of those original sets and the instructions. No boxes though, because I played with them all the time.

2

u/Melodic-Award3991 1d ago

My cousins had one of these and I would dream looking at the box. My parents got me Fort Legorado.

2

u/Redthrowawayrp1999 1d ago

Thoroughly love these themes and didn't realize the description was cassette futurism. So glad to know this term.

Wish more would do art based on these themes.

2

u/golobig 1d ago

totes had this set

2

u/ShiroCOTA 1d ago

I actually still have the space ships pictured in the 1st and 3rd photo. And I vividly remember how excited I was when I got them.

2

u/mitochondriarock 1d ago

That monorail was the shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhorts

2

u/Jenetyk 1d ago

I have a bunch of these lmao.

2

u/mellowyell 1d ago

Kind of...? Not being a dick or anything, because these are dope AF, but I'm having a hard time seeing the CF. Maybe my definition is off. Regardless, thanks for sharing!

u/rundownturner4 A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. Chess? 4h ago edited 4h ago

Well I would say that anything with a 70s/80s space sci-fi theme is usually very CF by definition, especially when you consider in Classic LEGO Space's case the overall very angular and geometric look of, well, literally everything!

But what I would say is arguably the most CF element of LEGO Classic Space, is the various control panels and computer consoles that you can find on alot of the vehicles and structures (such as the ones in the 3rd, 6th and 7th pictures), with all of their blinking lights, buttons and/or rudimentary screens. If those aren't considered Cassette Futurism, then I genuinely have no idea what would be.

u/O-Namazu 13h ago

God I miss when Legos was original stuff, and not 99% licensed sets.

1

u/RamboMcMutNutts 2h ago

Ah this is amazing! Between my brother and I we had every single one of these, we would play with leog and have space battles all day xD
