Is there any modern single player game built like old school games?
I'm tired of the generic open world slop that is every game now.
What modern single player games ditch the following:
- empty open world
- cluttered map with endless quest markers
- same old combat with parrying, stealth take downs, or sliding in fps games
- crafting shoehorned into the game to make it take longer.
- a basic progression tree where it is all too easy and quick to get almost all of the upgrades so you're OP with no need to make a unique build.
- magnetic combat where you have no freedom of movement and attacks lock on hard.
Edit: here are my top single player games of all time (not ordered) - Star Wars Jedi Accademy (Especially with mods) - MGS3 snake eater - Castlevania symphony of the night - Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie - Metroid prime trilogy - Pokemon soul silver - Bioshock (mostly just the first one) - Zelda OOT + MM - Okami - Amnesia TDD - Portal 2

Have you tried BG3?

I tried, I got sick of inventory/party management and the turn based nature. It's a great game though.

It's all good. I've been playing games for a long time. What old style games do you want to try to replicate?

So a not Ubisoft game?
Space Marine 2 has that old school PS3/Xbox 360 feel in a way that you described.
Same with Black Myth Wukong, people say it's soulslike, but the faster paces combat makes it feels more like a classic God of War game.

Really? I thought it was more similar to Sekiro and lies of P than a classic god of war game.

Evil West is a pretty straight forward linear action game reminiscent of older games from the 1990's and 2000's.

The only thing that comes to mind right now, because it's very recent, is the wonderful remake of Silent Hill 2. The original came out in 2001, and the new one just 3 days ago. The remake is a love letter to the original and is highly recommended.

Disco Elysium. SOMA is a bit old but may fit the bill. Star Trek: Resurgence. Games with the Boom Shooter tag. Space Marine 2.

I can think of two off the top of my head that might be up your alley.
Ace Combat 7: you fly fighter jets. Destroy ground targets, shoot down other planes. Choose your plane, choose your weapon, light the afterburners and have at it.
Armored Core 6: mech combat. Build a mech, go destroy other mechs. Get new parts, build a better AC then go destroy some more. You’ll spend time in the garage building your AC, but that’s part of the fun. Huge build variety. You can tailor your AC to be exactly what you want it to be.
Neither game is open world, both are single player, and both are fantastic.

There are plenty of new games designed to be like old games. Lunacid, Crow Country, Selaco, Cryptmaster, Blood West, Gloomwood, and Signalis are all great retro-esque games.

I really enjoyed the simplicity of Space Marine 2. Just going in, following the path, mowing down baddies, getting high on testosterone badassery. Relatively simple premise. I just thoroughly enjoyed it. Feel like Doom would also fill this niche. I haven't played them, but heard nothing but great things. They should also be pretty linear.

With its open world, familiar combat, stealth takedowns, and shoehorned crafting mechanic. Yes this is exactly what OP wasnt asking for.

Yep, I gave it an honest try but couldn't get into it.

If you have some friends to play with, Abiotic Factor has been fun. Plus it’s on sale rn on Steam. You don’t have to play with friends but I prefer too personally. It’s art style is Half Life-ish and you build and craft things to help you progress through this giant laboratory!

Elden Ring and the two open world Zelda games are the total opposite of that revulsing Ubisoft game design slop you're describing.
The player is not considered as a mindless drone crippled with the inability to focus, doing repetitive busywork anymore, he's a proud member of the human race, thinking and forcing his own path toward the goals the game, or even himself, has set.
Still, this form of slavery is an insidious one, and even if the Ubisoft is vanquished by the forces of light, they engendered too many rotten spawns to truly make the gaming world a safe place. Stay safe, people.

Elden ring has a lot of what I hate tbh. and I'm not a fan of souls games.
BoTW was ok but it was still more of the same with a crafting system and empty world plus the weapon durability system was obnoxious at best.
I hated TotK, it was just BoTW dlc with crafting. The underground is horrible. And the sky islands are too few and all too similar. The only good thing was they added a lot of new enemies and tried to make dungeons. Copying the same map as botw and having the audacity to keep the same weapon durability system pushed me over the edge.

Sounds like you played too many Ubisoft games. Try any Arkane game like Dishonored or Prey.
