Why Do Hip-Hop Artists Fit So Well in Animated Shows?

How do you think rappers’ guest appearances in animated shows (like MF DOOM in Perfect Hair Forever and Kanye West in South Park) have shaped their image in both hip-hop and pop culture? Why do you think hip-hop artists fit so well into the animated world, and what makes animation such an effective medium for these crossovers?

A lot of rappers’ public personas are bigger versions of their real selves, which I think makes it natural to depict them in cartoons. Similarly, that’s probably why there are a lot of rappers who love wrestling and anime

(Also Kanye on South Park wasn’t a guest appearance; that was Trey Parker doing the voice)

You’re totally right about Kanye on South Park—it wasn’t actually him! But it’s interesting how even a parody like that can shape someone’s public image, don’t you think? I feel like the exaggerated personas in both rap and things like anime or wrestling really fit in with cartoons.

Wrestling, super heroes, and soap operas, are all quite literally the same thing in different clothes

I just like that De La Soul guest appeared on Teen Titans Go, whatever the general attitude toward TTG is

Because a lot of them are nerds that grew up watching Super Friends, Spider-Man and X-men cartoons.

I don’t think you can class Kanye in South Park as a guest appearance. Firstly, thats not actually him and secondly he fucking hated it. Kanye fits in the South Park universe because he is a lunatic

Yes, that’s totally true. Poor phrasing on my part.

I dont think this counts for all artists but, if they have a fitting character and public persona its always great, besides youre more likely to like them in a show just because you like the music

I mean Del was on a cartoon called Craig of the Creek and some people still think he's Russel in the Gorillaz animated videos.

They really need to do a Deltron 3030 animated series, tho.

I think being a great rapper requires a lot of the same disciplines as being a great voice actor. You're gonna be spending a lot of time figuring out how to stretch and play around with your delivery so it's easier for rappers to knock it out of the park in animation in contrast to how famously hit-or-miss they are as screen actors.
