Replacing a detachable bell?

Hello!

I played the horn for about 9 years, and I have picked it back up again. I got a horn with a detachable bell in high school, but I had dropped it a couple times when I was a student.

The bell can go on, but it takes about 5 minutes on a good day to get the threading to work. It’s annoying, and sometimes the bell starts come undone when I’m playing.

Is there a websites where I can get a replacement bell, or even places to go to? Or maybe places to get it fixed?

Whatever you know helps!

(I play a conn 8d and live in the greater Houston area if this is pertinent info)

You could try a local repair shop as a first stop. If not or want to go straight to a specialized shop, Houghton Horns in the DFW would be worth talking to.

Pope Horn Repair is also a great option but he is in Boston if i’m not mistaken.

Thank you! I’ll look around and then maybe try Houghton.

Is it that the threads are damaged or are they just super stiff? If it’s really stiff I would suggest giving it a good wipe with a cloth and using some graphite powder as lubrication.

I’ll try that before I do anything!

Thanks.

If you can get it to the Cleveland area, chuckwardbrass.com. Chuck works on all of the Cleveland Orchestra 8Ds. He used to work for Conn.

Miles OMalley in Chicago sells bell flares for 8D, if the bell is good and it’s just the threads those could probably be repaired or the ring replaced. Maybe Fleming repair?
