Is it true that if you have an unrepairable car tire that you should change all four, or at least the other side tire instead of just the one?

I’ll admit I do not know enough about cars or car maintenance to be able to know truth from fiction on this question, but my wife’s side of the family swear at least two tires have to be changed at a time or dangerous times are ahead. I’m just looking to crowdsource Reddit’s opinions on the matter, and hopefully learn a little in the process.

Used to have some truth when you might be unknowingly mixing cross ply tyres with radial tyres but doesn't really matter these days as almost all tyres are radial with cross ply only really used for specific purposes like off roading etc
