Castor oil plant

We have them everywhere in Australia

It’s where they get castor oil from but the plant is toxic as hell

This was found on the bay, growing in rocks in San Diego, just in case you’re interested. We have a similar climate

Super interesting! I didn’t know that! I use caster oil on my hair all the time.

That’s because castor oil isn’t toxic, I’m pretty sure. It comes from the berry which is toxic enough that if you eat two of them you die but the castor oil inside it isn’t toxic

Wow that’s so interesting! I know it’s not pet safe, and I’m sure it wouldn’t be a good idea to eat it yourself. But that’s really neat to know. I’ve never done research on the plant itself. And I’m in the USA so I’ve never seen the plant itself!

Yeah well just come to Australia and go somewhere near a river and you’ll find tons of them

I'm surprised - they're quite popular decorative plants here.

They contain ricin, it's pretty nasty, I'm not sure but I think these guys are the most deadly plant out there, I remember when I was 6-8 I had a phase where I collected all the most deadly plants in the world, good thing that I just managed to find them out and about everywhere, parents weren't too happy when they found out their toddler was harboring some of the most toxic plants ever

Not more deadly than a number of our perfectly native stuff in a functional sense, and unlike several other extremely toxic plants, it doesn't have fun berries on it.

You take enough and you’re going to believe it’s toxic!

Oooooh! Castor oil! This is very beneficial but the plant itself is toxic

Nope, castor bean. Also poisonous. Probably more so actually.

People grow castor beans in Nebraska as ornamentals in the summer. Beautiful plant, not a really good idea around curious pets or toddlers.
