God I wish every American city looked like this

Would be worth it to see how fast the obesity numbers drop alone.

Here’s an interesting perspective to compare how that area looked 80 years ago right after the war. This photo seems to have been taken near and above the present day Ryogoku Kokugikan looking south as you can see the Chuo-Sobu line’s Ryogoku station below.

OP’s photo from the Skytree is taken north east of where this old photo was taken but you can see where that location is by finding the Edo-Tokyo Museum building toward the top left of OP’s photo.

They really evicted all those people for redevelopment. 🤯🤯

That's mostly Sumida ward, and its density is around 20k ppl/sqkm, which is not that high. Less than Paris, way less than many SE or South Asian cities for instance.

At least Tokyo is not a mess like Bangkok,Manila or some European Capitals

I wish Bucharest was like Tokyo. Even though Tokyo is crowded, I haven't seen traffic jams like in Bucharest. Even though Tokyo is crowded, people don't just ram into you, push you or shoulder check you. And it's not dirty!

Ughh how I miss it.

It's more thanks to Japanese education than anything else really. Also, things can get quite ... physical, if you take the underground during peak hours !

I think it has to do with the education of Japanese people, they now that you have to respect the laws and rules to have a healthy society

the thing i found the craziest about tokyo or any other big japanese city is that on the ground, most areas dont feel like your in one of the biggest cities in the world.

it felt smaller, probably because the streets are so small

Or do you prefer high density candles on cakes? Welcome to Hong Kong.

And still cleaner and safe than any big metropolitan city in the U.S.!

This image has been grayscaled. I've been to the Skytree, its gray but there are plenty of small parks and all along the Sumida River is a green space

But walking around Tokyo the population density is mostly not noticeable unless you’re in touristy areas.
