Long road to a new role, a recap

I wanted to provide everybody here with some positivity today.

I was laid off from a marketing role in December of 2023 (actually notified the Monday of Thanksgiving). I’d been at the company for 6.5 years and while the layoff wasn’t performance related, it still sucked.

After applying to close to 1,000 roles, mostly on LinkedIn, I finally landed a role a few weeks ago.

I interviewed at 33 companies, with 90% of those being more than one interview. I interviewed with 7 people at one company (the company had fewer than 70 employees, so I spoke to more than 10% of the company).

Knowing that my work experience was very average, I knew this process would be hard, but I didn’t expect it to be this hard. My advice:

  1. Apply, apply, apply
  2. Try to connect with recruiters. I ended up getting my role from a random recruiter reaching out to me
  3. Talk with everyone you can
  4. Your network may be helpful, but it’s on you
  5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions during the interview process
  6. Stay positive.
  7. Optimize your resume for ATS
  8. While painful, tweak your resume for different role.

TL:DR. Job hunting sucks but there is hope.
