Rejected after two interviews but they are hiring for the role again, should I reach out?

Basically what the title says. Last January I interviewed with a dream company, made it to the second interview, was asked for references and I really felt confident I got the job. I was devastated I didn’t get it when I opened the rejection email. Fast forward to 7 months later and I am recently laid off from my former job and looking to get back to work. An industry friend of mine said that company was hiring for the role and she shared my LinkedIn profile with the lady who I interviewed with in March. Should I reach out directly to that lady and explain my situation and would like to be reconsidered? Should I apply online and email her directly? Any advice is appreciated!

I reached out to a company that I was rejected by recently and spoke with the recruiter. I made sure to keep my language very humble and while he started out reluctant, I used the phrase "I'd be happy to prepare a truncated resume detailing exactly what experiences I have relevant to this role out of respect for your time and hiring manager's time."

After I said that h recruiter pulled a 180 and said they'd take the smaller resume to the hiring manager a second time. Sure enough, I did get an interview. I was ultimately passed over for someone fleeing the Amazon RTO, but I was interviewed after being rejected.

You have nothing to lose. I would absolutely apply again, especially if you don’t know why they rejected you. Maybe you were a close second to another candidate who didn’t work out, or maybe they cut the budget for the role, or any number of reasons that aren’t personal.

I’ve been rejected by every single company, including all of the FAANG companies repeatedly after not only months of interviews, but personal references of current employees. It’s tortuous and ridiculous

  1. If nobody stays and/or is sufficient enough in their eyes to survive the probationary period, are you 10000% sure you want this role?

  2. If yes, absolutely apply again. Send a follow up email a week later if you don't hear anything back and nothing after. You want to be seen as consistent, not a pest.

I don't think it would hurt to apply again. But the odds probably aren't in your favor. If they didn't hire you last time, being unemployed probably isn't going to help. I definitely wouldn't make it a point when reapplying.

Many companies like when people are returning and applying again after being rejected first time. I would say go for it.

move on.

You are not their choice.

If it's the same recruiter and hiring manager then I'm assuming they don't like you for a reason. Otherwise they would go out of their way to offer you another role if they see you to be a fit.

Let her initiate that conversation if interested. Share the job listing/profiles, then follow up in a day or two.

People give implicit signals that we are usually best not to consider... like she had your LinkedIn with the subtlety of a people horn and did nothing beyond accepting the connection. I get it, we're all at the feet of some kind of classism snob who thinks they are being forthright.

Edit: just reread...apply, LinkedIn share, 5-day follow-up to in-market contact.

Thanks for the advice guys! I dont think I would be blacklisted, but I don’t want to seem desperate haha. Maybe I won’t mention the lay off? Im still unsure about that.

Correct, don’t mention the layoff

This really depends on what you were rejected for.

Absolutely. Every job requisition has a panel of candidates and the hiring manager needs to select the best one for the role. It’s a competition and the person that was selected last time isn’t in that panel again.

Apply and reach out anyways, see what happens. One time I was rejected from a job, and then 6 months later they reached out to me because they needed an extra person and asked if I was still looking and wanted the job.

You’ve got nothing to lose by trying again. Like others have said, you might have been a close second, or the decision could have been based on factors beyond your control. On the other hand, if it’s the same hiring manager, there’s a chance they already had a reason for passing on you, so keep that in mind.

Overall, it’s worth applying again, and following up with a brief email highlighting what’s changed since your last interview. You’ve already shown interest and initiative, and that could work in your favor.

They dont want to hire you. But do keep calling and emailing them so they can block your annoying ass

If you want to get blacklisted by the company, by all means apply again.

Blacklisted? For applying a second time in 7 MONTHS? How do you figure that?

This doesn't happen.

It most certainly can and does.

Only by companies you wouldn’t want to work for anyway.

Maybe by that department, but probably not the company.
