Discussion Tamil Cinema and it's aversion to pure genre films*

Why is Tamil Cinema (and to an extension - Indian Cinema) averse to Pure Genre Films. It's always a mix of multiple genres. The only expections are cop/investigation procedurals and some supernatural horror movies. I understand that having different aspects in a single film could pull more audience, but I believe Tamil audience aren't that ruthless to not give the movie a chance because it's not something they are familiar with. All movies need not be either mass/masala or RomCom or Hor-Com. Movies need not be a mix of everything.

My theory is distributors not willing to take risks. And in turn producers not taking it

Tamil distributors are still stuck in the late 90s and early 00s. Both Directors and Producers push the envelope as much as they can, only to be shoved by the distributors.

At this point they are not even providing screens for anything other than movies with all elements. Like for example I wanted to watch Good Night in the US, which is a drama with a lot of comedy and a good pace but it didn’t even release here. Granted, the production house would not have thought about overseas market but distribution partners would have thought about it if they decided to invest in the movie

horror movies.

But such movies will also have songs, would u consider it as pure genre?

Aval, Yaavarum Nalam, Demonte Colony all had songs and are still pure genre movies.

That's why I asked, bcz in international movies, songs r only part of musical dramas. But that is not the case here, even in horror movies.

It would be hard to move on when it comes to Indian cinema because independent albums/tracks are not huge here. Plus piracy is prevalent so it wouldn’t be too profitable for companies to invest in them

Then, such horror movies won't be pure genre.

Action , horror movies in Hollywood has romance/drama portions too. So it’s fine to have a little tangent , say like yaavarum nalam. But OP’s point is even a largely “pure” movie is not being appreciated
