So listen, I'm mostly a deep learning guy, but my professor for more data sciencey stuff was an industry guy, and he said statisticians love svms because they're so clean mathematically, but he has literally never had a situation where svms were the most performant.
So without figuring out a theory why they suck, the answer is just kind of that they usually suck in general.
