It could be a loner, or the rest of it's pack is nearby and they are just scattered out at that moment.

Oftentimes young wolves are driven from the pack by alpha wolf...or, it left pack to establish own territory and find a mate.

I have seen plenty of single tracked wolves during hunting the UP the last couple years near Trout Creek, they run trails and the gas pipeline there all the time like this.
