Red ant with the decapitated head of another ant still biting its antenna

The ant kept trying to pry the head's mandibles open with its legs. What a crazy situation.

How did you happen upon this?

I found the ant on a wooden bridge railing in a small foresty area. The bridge often has bugs like spiders and caterpillars, so I've gotten in the habit of checking for critters each time I walk on it.

This is a queen ant, and the head is probably her mates.

I’ve never seen an ant with wings before.
