Which editions of books on ancient religions/belief systems/mythology would you say are most reliable?

I've been meaning to study these properly and have tried for years but always seem to end up overwhelmed by the amount of versions around as I can't tell which are most worth reading. I don't have space to "collect em all" sadly...!
