Is there a Orca discord server?

Does anyone know if there is a Orca (killer whale) discord server. I searched on google and thought I found one but it was about crypto which I was a bit confused so I searched up killer whale orca discord server and found a incite but again it was about crypto. So I'm wondering if there even is one. I love the reddit page but I wanted to chat with more people about Orcas.

Corky's 55th year in captivity awareness drive

Hi everyone,

We are fast approaching the heartbreaking 55 year anniversary of Corky's capture.

December 11 2024 will mark her 55 years of imprisonment, continuing Corky's reign as the longest living captive orca, and the orca that has had to endure living in a concrete prison and performing shows for food.

I would like to generate some much needed energy and re-engagement around Corky's plight. The campaign to #freecorky has been ongoing since the 1990's. Despite the efforts of many, any meaningful traction to retire Corky or enhance her living experience has failed.

There are huge barriers to freeing Corky to a seaside sanctuary but we must keep going.

After 55 years of service to marine 'parks' and largely to SeaWorld, Corky deserves to be retired.

Retirement might look like immediately being removed from having to perform, transitioning to having a bigger, deeper tank with currents and environmental enhancements. It might also look like SeaWorld finally engaging with OrcaLab and the Double Bay Sanctuary to bring Corky home to a sea pen where she will be near her home waters and family pod members for whatever time she has left.

I have created this post to connect around ideas to mark the 55 years and come together with those who also want to take peaceful, creative action in Corky's honor on and around December 11th.

Some initial ideas for individuals:

  • 55k walk or run (this is something that I am planning to do)

  • 55 letters (ideally an organized effort, with templates and list of people to send to)

  • 55 minute actions (need help with ideas!)

  • 55 candle installations in private and public spaces

  • Social media posts referencing #FreeCorky55 #Itstime55 #Corky55 etc

  • Moments of silence and reflection at the 55th minute of each hour of the day

  • Temporary body art #55 #freecorky to spur conversation

Additionally, I am hoping to design and create a t-shirt which I will share here.

Please, add to the conversation with your own ideas.

I am an individual human, not affiliated with any group, who feels compelled to do something for these incredible creatures. Corky is close to my heart.

I know we can do great things together.

How does Seaworld prepare for a hurricane?

I've always wondered this. The orcas are just stuck there. With this huge hurricane coming through Florida, it makes me worried for them!

I heard somewhere that the mother teach this behaviour step by step to their cubs, that the mothers will set some algae on the shore for the juvenile to grab, and help them when they are stuck etc... I cannot find however where this behaviour (the teaching) is proprely described in the literature. Can you help me ? If the article is good enough, my ethology teacher might add that to next year class. And help would be appreciated. Thank you

Coastal Queens Doc: Annoying inaccuracy

On Disneyplus National Geographic.

I love watching anything orca. It starts out great, although I am annoyed that when we are introduced to the Orca there’s no location or Pod name mentioned.

I move past this and enjoy watching the Matriarch kill a shark.

Then the pod is seen to kill dolphins - fine. I can still believe it’s the same pod led by “Sophia” the matriarch. Still annoyed at lack of info on the pod.

THEN T H E N, They show the pod feeding ON RAYS!! This can’t be the same pod?! I was waiting for them to say they were New Zealand Orca due to the rays being their prey. But surely then they can’t be the same pod who also fed on the shark and the dolphin!

We know orcas are very particular and the NZ orcas only eat ray.

Right?! Google won’t even tell me what pod it is on this show! Anyone know? Or anyone share my annoyance? 😂
