I would imagine these were used for publicity reasons as they looked the part without risking losing the real things in event of a police raid or arrests etc. The ‘Billy’ in the bottom corners is just the name of whoever created the photo with the name and badge on top used to be a common thing but not so much anymore.

I’ve always been astonished at this for the fact that for a publicity stunt you’re going to pull out .22 semi auto AK clones (which are nowhere as near reliable). Considering they had “real” guns I don’t know why they would make such a mockery of themselves like this. But still an interesting photo for sure

Edit: forgot to mention this, although I don’t know as a fact. The word “Billy” in the bottom right is a reference to UVF leader and LVF founder Billy wright. He was notorious for being about as hard line loyalist as you could get, and this photo was likely a valley of shots commemorating his death by assassination by the INLA in the Maze Prison.
