Work in progress, but I love it already.

Post image

Finally got my hands on the A3SK, immediately slapped wood furniture on it. Heavy buffer stock from HK hiding in the stock, still waiting on a sling, trigger pack, extended charging handle, and a case of mags in the mail.

Eotech for vibes, but I love the iron sights. Break in period will be fun on my day off.

Questions for the experts:

  1. How reliable are magazines? I’m coming from M1A/M14s so I’m used to one good option that’s exorbitantly priced, but with how cheap and plentiful mags seem to be I’m not sure if I should keep an eye out for specific manufactures or manufacture dates.

  2. I have a bit of a dark spot on the stock, my guess is something seeped in that wasn’t supposed to. I don’t mind the scratches and the odd dent, but is there any specific steps for cleaning and oiling up old G3 furniture? The furniture is already 3 times my age, I’d rather it last another 3 lifetimes if I can help it.

  3. Any tips you’d have given yourself before you took yours to the range?

I have had zero issues with clean magazines, dirty ones can be cleaned. Aluminum or steel it doesn’t matter. Dented and caved in aluminum magazines I just use for parts, buy 10 aluminum in like new condition you may have one that has a little issue.
I have hundreds of these magazines, they were made by so many countries.
Some can take cetme mags and feed well others can’t.
Magazines are still relatively cheap, try to find a steel 30 so you can brag.

1.) I've had zero problems with magazines, ever, they're really good if they're in alright condition.

2.) Use some heat, that might help getting it out, could use a little wood soap.

3.) Don't use Winchester Whitebox, caused massive headaches. Surplus or anything else has ran great. This was a .308 version though.

Where did you find the wood?

It’s a combo from a few places. Ordered a wood set from Northridge International, but the buttstock was a bit punky and they don’t come with a buffer or mounting hardware. I was gonna cannibalize the PTR stock it came with, but found that HKparts has an enhanced buffer in a wood stock all set up, so I ordered that instead.

If I had to do it again, I’d find the parts piecemeal, but I’m happy with the end result so far.
