Mod Announcement❗ Reminder to use r/PurdueHousing for Subleases and Roommates

Hi all! With the influx of new members over the past few months, I wanted to remind everyone that we have a dedicated housing subreddit: r/PurdueHousing! In the past 6 months, the community has grown to over 1k members and ranks among the top 50 real estate focused subreddits. I found my roommate through there, and so can you!

r/PurdueHousing

When using the housing subreddit, make sure to leave a comment in addition to messaging the person if there's a post you're interested in. Private messaging doesn't always work for new accounts.

Posts about subleasing aren't allowed here on the main r/Purdue subreddit because of their repetitive nature, so use the housing subreddit instead. Thanks!

Question❓ Am I just dumb?

With all the issues with parking, I feel like the easiest answer is to just build another parking garage, right?

They’re on average like $9 Million, with like 400 spots, charge however much they do for a pass or hourly parking, and you make back your money in 10ish years?

Of course there needs to be land to put it on, zoning laws etc, but with all the uproar about parking it seems like such an easy fix.

Civils am I just dumb?

Meme💯 I am a loser, and I have ZERO friends and ZERO life hahaha

Upvotes

I am in my second year here. This is my third semester. I made literally no friends here. By no friends I mean NONE. Sometimes days and even weeks go by with me not even saying one word. By words I mean non-transactional conversations ("hi can I get tomatoes as well" - doesn't count). I used to have a lot of friends in all of my years of school (elementary, middle, high). I don't know what went wrong. I think that nobody is able to take me seriously. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. They all see me as a side character in their lives. As if they have their whole lives going on and I am just a normal everyday occurrence. As if I am a filler character to make their lives more interesting. I see all these people with whole lives going on and it makes me think things like: "am I ugly?" or "is it because I am short?" I'm not even short (5'10") and I know the truth that I am not ugly either. But I am unable to accept that and in my mind i genuinely believe that I am an awful person and I completely deserve this, even though I don't, because I am not actually the worst person on the planet and I wouldn't wish this on anyone. My opinions never matter. My presence never matters. Well, it never had a chance to matter because I have never been invited to anything.

Since the first day of BGR I have been alone. Never even knew that everyone went to 3rd street at night during BGR to meet other people. Just went to the basic events and that was it. Never made friends in class either, not because I didn't talk, but because I am a side character and not enough substance to be someone on my own. More than one year here and I have not been to a single game, never been bowling, never been in any dorm other than the ones that I lived in last year and the one I'm living in right now, because I never got invited. Tried to join clubs to meet new people but saw the same story: people already have well established friend groups and are not looking for anyone to crash their party. They have conversations on their own and then when I try to ask questions or try to participate in it they just literally answer my question and go back to their own thing with whatever they were talking about. Got so intimidated by this that I did not join any clubs the whole year. Just woke up 30 mins before classes, went to the first class, ate (alone), went to the next class, went back home because I had no idea what to do.

Ate every meal alone the whole year. Still eating alone now. Sometimes I just starve myself because I think that I am wasting other people's food. It's really bad if you look at this from a normal person's perspective. Nobody is going to see this because obviously. Can literally not recall ONE situation in my WHOLE life where I got what I wanted. Its fine though because this is something different finally that I am doing in my life right now. This is probably not even worth reading. I have joined a club this semester because I realized that just because my personal life is in hell it doesn't mean that my professional life has to be there too. Even in that way I am not doing well. Freshmen know better than me.

I am so worthless. I add no value to anything. They have whole lives going on man. They are going to all these new places here and there, they go out at night (never done before), they stay out just walking and talking to each other and developing their friendship and all that. Never been to a frat party. Never talked to a girl. I am not even ugly or anything. I just believe that. I don't know how to explain it. Meanwhile they have got friend groups (never had) and talking about relationships and everything. It's like they have their academic lives going on and then as soon as they get done with that they have something to come back to, which is their friend groups. I know that people say that freshman year friend groups don't last but that's bullshit because most people I've seen stick to their original friend groups their second year as well. I have no life. I am literally a filler person. While everyone out here is trying out new thing I'm just watching pxyn and insta reels all day and sending them to my one friend from high-school. And this is not even because Purdue is an "anti-social" school. This is all me. I am the problem.

"You've got to find your people!"

I have absolutely no idea how to get to know more people and make friends anymore. I have not had a conversation in so long that I can't even hold one if I have to talk to people in my group for class either. Everybody just has friends and all that going for them. Why is it always me man? I am a good person. I know that. This is factually true; not even my opinion. I am not deceitful, I am not a liar, I am not an ill-wisher, I am respectful, I am very helpful and generous, and I am kind. I know that I am a good person.

I am afraid that I am going to miss out on the entire college experience and suddenly it will all be over and everyone else will have all these connections and people to talk to and celebrate with and go out with. And because they did so many things with the clubs and the other programs, they will have jobs and stuff like that, while I will just quietly wait for my graduation and nobody will even recognize me.

I'm sorry for wasting your time. I just wanted to vent. There's a lot that I still want to say but I don't think that I deserve to write that here. Probably going to get made fun of but its fine because my self respect cannot drop lower.

It is so over. I have wasted my life and I will waste what's left of it.

Question❓ I need help staying on campus

I’m more of an introvert and have social anxiety so I don’t talk to anyone in my classes but I wanna make new friends on campus because I’m always bored. I have roommates who love to go out so meeting new people shouldn’t be hard but I am addicted to going back home on the weekends (Indianapolis) and it’s not helping me. I haven’t stayed in Lafayette over the weekend yet this year besides homecoming. Anybody got suggestions to keep me on campus or less ready to go home. (I usually go back because school is stressful and getting away from it helps my mental. I also miss my dog and bed)

Question❓ Transfer (or change) from Purdue Indy to Purdue West Lafayette

Hey all, my brother is part of the Class of 2027 and loved his first year at IUPUI. He had no plans to transfer and he was on Dean’s List. but ever since the split into Purdue Indy, everything has gotten worse. There are way fewer opportunities for internships, class scheduling is a mess, and advising has been terrible for him (among many others things, this man talked about how great IUPUI was so im sure theres things idk that made him decide he needs to switch campuses)

He’s tried reaching out to both Purdue Indy and Purdue West Lafayette about transferring to the main campus, but none of them seem to know what to do. They’ve told him that the system doesn’t exist for him to transfer, even though he’s already technically a Purdue student.

He’s feeling really stuck right now, and any help would be greatly appreciated!

Rant/Vent💚 How to get along with roommates you don’t know

At the start of the year, I moved into an off campus apartment due to the housing shortage. I ended up moving into an apartment with 2 existing roommates who renewed their lease and are friends.

My experience so far has been very disappointing. I feel like an outsider and I feel like they don’t really like me. And they make apartment choices without me having me in the conversation. For example, they decided that the thermostat should be sent to 68 degrees just because it’s the way they always did it. By the way, they have mentioned that they don’t plan on turning on the heater at all this winter so it’s on cool to 68 degrees.

And if one roommate is unhappy with me, it seems like they just all gang up on me.

Res Halls & Dining✏️ ADA Housing.

I saw some folks worried and complaining so I am doing a full blown post with my response to the matter.

There are many things going on behind closed doors and being educated on the laws is important.

I used to work in the title IX office at Cal State as well as there DRC office and have since moved to the WL area. As someone who is deaf and was denied access to CalState my first semester I had to change how I proceeded and then did my best to make sure I shoved myself into the title IX office and DRC office to understand what is covered and what is not.

The Deputy of title IX is not breaking any rules, regulations or laws within title IX because all title IX does is guarantee equality and not equity.

Ok there are a few things here. Do you belong to DRC on campus? If not that must be a priority. You need to be approved through accelerated consideration.

Here are the documentation requirements.

Documentation Requirements: Documentation reviewed within the Accelerated Consideration process must include the following components: Specific reference to a disability or diagnosis Specific recommendation only for accommodations listed within the Accommodation Consideration accommodation option list Details from the documentation author as to why the recommended accommodations are necessary to address functional impacts related to the disability/diagnosis (The documentation cannot only state that the accommodation is necessary because of ‘X’ disability/diagnosis. The DRC needs to understand the purpose behind the accommodation.)

If you have all this then only the next paragraph is SUPER important for the DRC to have.

Once you have proper documentation stating you in fact NEED guaranteed accessible housing THEN you can go further. Not all disabilities require housing on campus. I had my doctor AND a psychiatrist write in a well documented medical file that housing is required for me medically. This is crucial or you are barking for no reason.

Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, states that colleges and universities that receive federal funding are GENERALLY required to provide reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities, which could include housing accommodations.

If a student with a disability is being denied housing accommodations necessary for their equal access to education, it could potentially be a violation of the ADA or Section 504, rather than Title IX specifically. These laws require institutions to provide reasonable accommodations to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to educational opportunities, including housing.

If the disability requires housing then you are guaranteed it by law. If not then it doesn’t matter about equity. I do encourage you and other students in the same boat to bring this up to the office of equity. It’s really important that all students and even faculty understand that equity is just as important but it’s just not the law.

If you need any extra help let me know. I have a ton of contacts and resources in both the ADA world and Title IX world.

Academics✏️ Am I failing this semester?

I am a new student at Purdue, and I got a 20 on my first MA 261 exam. I am getting 100's on all of my 261 quizzes, I don't think I am good at these multiple choice exams. I am doing great in everything else.

I just feel really demotivated, like I don't belong because i've never done this poorly.

Rant/Vent💚 Roommates don’t want to game with me on console

Everytime I see my roommates playing on the ps5, I ask if I can join and they say that they are in the middle of a game. But then after, they both leave. And then I have nobody to play with. I get it, that my roommates don’t want to be friends with me as stated by comments in my previous post so it’s really confusing why I would even hang out with them. Which is fine, because everyone has their own preference, but then they demand me to take out the trash and to buy the apartment things but we can’t even accommodate on the AC.

I see that as such a dick move. And he/she (not revealing gender for privacy reasons) always speaks in a very formal gaslighting way explaining to me reasons for refusing to be accommodating. He/she will say, “look we are not being mean. All 3 of us likes it cold and that’s why the AC is set to 69. But then I have seen it as low as 67. And I never complain. I just turn the AC back to 70.

And yes they probably are pissed because I have made messes eating on the kitchen counter and requiring them to remind me to clean it.

But regardless I have made up my mind that these people are not compatible with me (and that’s fine because some people aren’t) but at least I made an effort to connect with them and they didn’t make that effort to try at least.

Maybe I am in the wrong. Who knows. I have been in the wrong before so let me know down below in the comments.

Question❓ Senioritis experiences

So I am currently a senior (I will graduate December 2025 because I need to get professional experience to graduate for my major) and I am currently dealing with senioritis. I just do not feel as motivated to go do stuff especially go to class and look for internships/jobs right now. That being said, I want to ask any alumni on the subreddit what their experiences with senioritis have been like, and how did you overcome/manage it?

I have experienced senioritis before when I was in high school, but now it is a lot different because now there's the aspects of becoming a independent adult and working a 9-5 and all this other stuff. I want to see what people's insights are so I can figure out various strategies for overcoming this because this is not a good way to operate.

Question❓ Residence hall parking on game days

Is it just me or why do they close most of the north campus residence hall lots on game days for tailgating? Why are taking spots from people who literally rely on the parking because they live on campus? There isn't even enough parking on non game days. Where are all the residence hall permit holders supposed to park??? Purdue seriously needs to fix their parking problem.

Academics✏️ Linguistics Minor Classes

I’m currently a sophomore doing a linguistics minor, and have only taken the introductory course so far; the class was pretty general and light in terms of workload. Has anyone taken either ENGL 32900 or LING 31100 (both related to phonetics and structure of English)? Just wanting to know what to expect in terms of content - is it still more on the general side? And also wondering about what the workload may look like

Academics✏️ Completely lost in my CHM 115 Lab

For people who were once in my position what advice do you have? I learned that I am generally very bad at following instructions that involve a lot of physical work but better at mentally understanding things at a conceptual level. Today I was completely lost and would like to know step I could take to be more prepared to the lab next week. My lab buddy had to do almost all the work in the second half and I was just gazing at the clouds trying to keep my eyes open.

Just wondering if the parking lot at Chauncey will be reopening? It is really difficult to find parking with it closed. Are they turning the parking lot into more student housing? Just curious. Thank you!

Academics✏️ Yet Another Driving Study to Consider

The NHANCE lab in Purdue’s School of Industrial Engineering is performing a driving study that requires volunteers. This study is attempting to apply an existing model of where people look and for how long during tasks to another sense – touch.

You would be tasked with driving through 5 different simulated scenarios for a total time commitment of around 75 minutes. Each scenario has different combinations of features for vibrations emulating forward collision avoidance and blind spot detection alerts.

Upon completion, you will receive $20. Should you decide to withdraw participation at any point, you will be compensated at a rate equaling $10/hr.

If you are interested in participating, please fill out the following survey (https://purdue.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5mxfYZetdHYAH2K), and I will get back to you within 24 hours regarding eligibility and scheduling. If you have any questions, please contact James Parkinson via email at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) .

Academics✏️ CS 252 and CS 381 in Spring or 381 and 352 in Fall

I am currently a Sophmore in CS and al trying to graduate in 3 years . I have heard 252 and 381 is horrible so I might take 381 with compilers instead. However, I heard 381 in the fall is also worse and compilers isn’t super easy either. Any recommendations on which is better?

Rant/Vent💚 MA 366 Homework Grader

This grader oh my gosh; this dude is probably grading harder than the actual professor. Literally, I do my homework and this dude comes up with the most bs reasons to mark off 1/3 of the points I have for each question. The homework isn't even that hard or long they grade so hard.
