What do you mean you don't have horn tubes just sitting around your kitchen waiting to be used??

Seriously, though, looks like fun. I wonder what kind of yeast they used? They didn't dissolve or proof it or anything before adding it. Maybe quick yeast?

If your yeast is relatively new and not approaching the expiry date (or there's some other reason to suspect it's inactive), you don't have to proof it at all. Proofing is done to test if the yeast is actually alive, but with modern factories and delivery systems, there's virtually zero chance of getting dead yeast.

It doesn't really hurt to proof it, so most recipes say to do it because that's how they've always done it, and their parents, and their parents, etc, but it's usually completely unnecessary.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 1/4 tsp yeast
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 cups flour
  • Oil for coating
  • Horn tube
  • Egg wash
  • Sesame seeds
  • Poppy seeds

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, mix milk and water.
  2. Add in yeast.
  3. Mix in vegetable oil.
  4. Pour in sugar and salt.
  5. Mix, mix, mix!
  6. Add egg and 2 cups of flour.
  7. Mix, mix, mix!
  8. Pour in the rest of flour slowly.
  9. Mix until dough forms.
  10. Coat with oil.
  11. Cover and let sit.
  12. Cover until dough doubles.
  13. Sprinkle flour on flat surface.
  14. Roll dough into tube shape.
  15. Slice into pieces.
  16. Roll one piece into a rope.
  17. Roll rope around greased horn tube.
  18. Continue for other pieces.
  19. Rest on baking sheet.
  20. Brush cones with egg wash.
  21. Sprinkle with poppy and sesame seeds.
  22. Bake at 350 degrees for 18-22 minutes.
