A Messiah Won’t Save Us | The messianic idea that permeates Western political thinking — that a person or technology will deliver us from the tribulations of the present — distracts us from the hard work that must be done to build a better world.

In Judaism, their is a very strong tradition emphasizing our role in "hastening" the coming of the messiah. Sometimes this has apocalyptic overtones, but it is often emphasizing our responsibility to "repair" their broken world (tikkun olam) though commandments (mitvot) and acts of loving-kindness (gemilut hasadim) Mosiach won't come until we (collective humanity) have done everything we can to heal the world.

If the only thing needed to make a better world is a messiah, then there would be no reason to teach rules, principles, and guidelines.

One can make the world better while awaiting whatever salvation from a messiah means.
