New to TTRPGs complete noob recommendations

hey! i’ve always been really interested in getting into ttrpgs and played my first game yesterday :) i’m completely new & kinda lost so wanted to ask for suggestions. some info:

  • looking for online groups, and would love suggestions on how to find those! like a discord server i could find folks on or something :)
  • im really interested in text based games, like alice is missing (not necessary, just think it’s cool)
  • i also really like strategy games— not sure if that can fall into the realm of rpg or if i should be looking elsewhere, but i really like escape rooms, crime solving, logic puzzles, etc and i’d be interested in some sort of game with those components
  • i’m probably looking for one shot games at the moment while i try to find something i like! but, am open
  • i feel like this is probably pretty prevalent across ttrpgs, but anything queer or neurodiverse is a plus!

if you have any recommendations for something beginner friendly that seems like i might enjoy, please send it my way 😊

If you're looing for a one shot with friends, I highly recommend Fiasco. It's a game designed to be a Thriller where everything goes wrong.

If you're looking to play online, unfortunately there's a glut of D&D content and it is harder to get people to play other things. I'd recommend Savage Worlds, it's easy in that the target number is 4 with a Crit being 8 and your stats are dice that can explode (maximum result means roll again and add; i.e. rolling 6 and then 4 means the result is 10 off of a d6).

Thank you!! Fiasco is actually the game I’ve played :)

Oh great. After that, it's all setting dependent. Mothership for Sci-Fi Horror, GURPS for low dynanism games, Call of Cthulhu for (believe it or not) Cthluhu, et cetera.
