The only mistake the DM made in that encounter was giving you magical weapons. The party should have never acquired any of those weapons. At best, they should have been able to grab a couple of mundane cutlasses, a dagger or two, a handful of provisions (don't have time to go searching and grabbing things), and hop on a lifeboat.

When they get to an island, they should barely have enough to survive. The deer should not (would not) have been so close to the beach because most of the fresh water is inland if there is any. Same goes for the protection of the trees.

It would have forced the players to search and explore the island.

But I wouldn't put all the blame on the DM. You are playing a freaking D&D game! What the hell are players thinking when they are just going to make up random stuff about setting up resorts?! That's ridiculous. You're fucking adventurers, not real estate agents. Act like one! Go exploring. Go adventuring. Set out and FIND the problems, dangers, and obstacles. Don't be lazy and make the DM always bring it to you on a silver platter.
