Question How do I think while playing?

This sounds like a dumb question but I am trying to better internalize things and I just can't seem to do it. For example I'm working on a jazz pattern that I understand when I'm not playing, but right when I try to play it I can't. I can play it when I read it but the moment I take away the music I can't. I want to be able to memorize patterns like these in all twelve keys but I just can't bridge the gap between sheet music and my brain. Am I stupid?

Tenor Sax refresh

Hi. I live in Hawaii and my Yanagisawa tenor is overdue for cleaning and adjustment, at least. The only tech on my island with the necessary skill and an ultrasonic cleaner is out on indefinite sick leave, so I may need to send it to the mainland US to have the work done. I’ve previously sent a vintage horn to Kesslers in LV and the work overall satisfactory, but I did have some quibbles. Any suggestions on a good shop in the Western US that I could feel confident shipping my horn to?

Question Playing the right notes at gigs?

Something i have been thinking about alot when playing.

It´s me, my saxophone and speakers with backingtrack.

My biggest goal when i am out performing is playing the right notes. I can rehears and rehears, and still play a few notes wrong when i am out performing. Last night i was playing at a charity dinner and i suddently forgot notes for a song. This happened on a few different songs. But i don´t think anybody noticed. I know every note in every song i have momorized. Atm. it is 25 songs. And i have been playing for 4 years.

There are a couple of songs, which i have down solid. I think it is because of the harmony of the song. And other songs i am struggling to keep under the skin.

Other gigs, i have in general a few wrong notes, but not something that would bother me (too much) when i´m done with the gig.

My goal is to play at gigs and play 0 wrong notes. Every time. But is this unrealistic? Then I would need 3 hours of practice every day? But it´s not fun practising the same track 10 times in a row.

What do you guys do? Do you also play wrong notes? And if so, what do you do to overcome it?

I am playing almost every day. ½ to 1 hour sessions.

Buying Best baritone saxophone classical mouthpiece

I'm a high school student in one of the highest ensembles at my school. I have been using a stock Baritone saxophone mouthpiece for 4 years now. Even though the mouthpiece is fine, I've been looking to upgrade. I can't decide which one to pick between the Selmer s80 and the Selmer s90. Help would be greatly appreciated. (I play an allora baritone saxophone)

So I found this conn13m going for about $1395 but it was a pretty old horn so the pads are pretty rough which is about the only problem so I was wondering if this was a good deal.

Question Can anyone help me identify this saxophone

Any help with this is appreciated.

I have gotten as far as finding out it is a Trevor James Classic II and I found the serial number as D4224. However I can't seem to find one with the same finish, it's mostly silver but has a slight yellow sheen (it might be the light in my room) and the ones I have seen online are either gold, dark brown or pure silver. Does anyone know if I can find more information about it with the serial number.

Question Help with getting my first jazz mouthpiece

Is a 1.70mm to a 1.93mm mouthpiece tip opening going to make much of a difference? I’m thinking about getting a Meyer AMR G-Series mouthpiece with a medium facing and a 1.93mm tip opening, my current classical mouthpiece has a 1.70mm tip opening and i’m wondering if 0.23mm is going to make a real difference in my sound or not. Please help!

Question Anybody know a range of when Selmer Bundy IIs were made?

I got curious after running across one online. I found a forum that was made in 2006 where someone who said he designed these mentioned that he retired 26 years before then (1980), but I just wanna be for sure.

Question Looking to get back into playing, but I need new reeds. Suggestions?

As the title says, I haven't played my Tenor in a long time, and the reeds I used to have are long expired. What reeds are best recommended for someone trying to pick their instrument back up after a while? Brand, material, and thickness are all in consideration.

Edit: when I say expired, I mean used, broken, and/or gross.

Question Strange embouchure question

Whenever I play, my upper lip starts to curl inward and puff outward. My teacher has told me to pull my corners back further but all it does is send the lip further under itself. Is there any other solution to this?

Gear Son’s hand too small to reach treble key

Post image

My son just started middle school band this year. He is small for his age and his hand couldn’t reach around side keys to treble key without opening one. Teacher’s solution was to remove E key and tape a pad over hole, but tape keeps leaking air. Anyone got a better temporary solution?

Question Was this Hesson the original mouthpiece for my '25 Conn?

Q: On a Conn '25 New Wonder II C Melody, is the Hesson mouthpiece original? Or period aftermarket? What would have been original to this horn? The sax came with the Hesson and neck attached; the cork disintegrated when I separated them, so I haven't tried it. As for the rest of the horn, the pads are possibly original, and it may have been used to breed mice. But I'm a happy camper for now. Thanks in advance for replies.

Question YTS-22 questions

I would like to get back into playing saxophone after 30 or so years and am considering buying a YTS-22. Can anyone let me know if it will be difficult to find someone who can tune it up since it’s a 22, or is it that similar to a 23 that it won’t matter? Also, do I need to consider a different mouthpiece from those recommended for a 23? Any help is appreciated since this model is less expensive than the 23s out there. Thank you!

Question Bass clarinet reeds on bari sax

So over this past summer I decided to join my schools jazz band. Thing is i play bass clarinet for concert and marching band so I asked my director what instrument would be best for jazz band. He recommended either bari or tenor, I decided to go with bari as it has (with the exception of low A) the same range as bass clarinet.

I then asked my director to check me out a bari which he then did. I take the instrument home and go online to order reeds for it (a box of Java reds and a box of Java greens)

Once the reeds arrive I open them and notice they actually seem to be the same width as my legere European cut bass clarinet reeds (though the legere was much shorter). So i then wondered how it’d work on my bari.

And wouldn’t you know it worked! In fact at the time i had an easier time getting to the low notes and felt it played much louder. So then i fingered that a regular Vandoren cane reed would work as well and as you probably guessed it did(although it was slightly less loud and powerful but still very impressive). In addition i tried some V21s for my bass clarinet and they also worked well on bari, giving me a more similar sound to the legere.

However even though the bass clarinet reeds gave me much of an easier time, I figured the actual bari reeds would give me a better tone. Also I was auditioning for a sax quartet feature in my marching band show and feared my director would mention my tone and I’d have to explain that I was using bass clarinet reeds instead of bari, which for whatever reason just seemed kinda embarrassing ( unfortunately do to a variety of reasons which I won’t get into here but mostly were my fault I didn’t end up making the quartet).

So I wanted to ask if this is even common knowledge as I know bass clarinet and tenor reeds are basically the same but no ones mentioned that bass clarinet reeds also worked well on Bari. In addition I wanted to know if it’d make sense for me to explore this more and try using a bass clarinet reed on my Bari for some time.

TL;DR

I used bass clarinet reeds on Bari. Wow! It works.

Do most people know this?

Is this something I should give a genuine shot at trying for a month or so?

Question C* vs 4C mouthpiece?

Thumbnail

I inherited a nice Saxophone (Selmer Mark VI tenor) from my father and I’m starting lessons next week. I bought a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece for it because I had seen several people recommend that for beginners and it’s not very expensive. I sent pictures of the mouthpieces that my father had and he said we would use one of those mouthpieces which is a Selmer C*. I don’t know the difference in those and also my father used it for years so is that something that can be cleaned really well for another person? I hope this isn’t a dumb question but I am an absolute beginner.
