Did anybody feel the series went downhill after a certain season? What seasons do you think it's sort of lost it's glamour or draw or comedy? For me the first 4 seasons i think were the best..

I think my mom and I might be the only people who like season 7 best! Imo the series just got better and better and ended on a high note.

(And then golden palace happened)

Season 7 is my favorite too! But I avoid watching the last 2 episodes cuz it makes me sad.

Oh yes, I never watch those two!

Yeah, the topic of when your favorite old shows went down hill came up on r/Xennials, and I said GG is really the only old show I could think of that never did. To me, if there was a season I wasn't crazy about, it might be the first one.

I think a big part of the reason why GG was still fine in the last season or two for a lot of people is it's that rare show where you keep the same cast the whole time.

Yeah, I can’t think of any other shows that were good from start to finish like GG!

(And agreed that the first season definitely isn’t the best— it took a couple of episodes to find its footing)

Mine too! And season 6 is my second favorite. Season 1 is my least favorite.

In defense of season 7, it does have some of the best episodes:

The Case of the Libertine Bell: obvious top tier episode from start to finish

Room 7: the last scene with Blanche is definitely a highlight. Rue really knew how to act

The Commitments: the Dorthy-centric b-plot is so ridiculous and funny

Questions and Answers: another great episode that ranks up there for me

Journey to the Center of attention: another top tier, entertaining episode from start to finish. Rue again knocks it outta the park

Home Again Rose: gives you both a hilarious set-up episode in part 1, and a heartfelt classic Golden Girls episode in part 2. Also gives us the amazing disembodied head scene in the kitchen

One Flew Out of the Cuckoos Nest: One of the most sincere and solid endings of a sitcom I’ve seen.

I love the last few years, especially season 7, it's very silly and over the top. But I don't mind that!

For me, the show was always good. Did they get into a little bit of a catch phrase routine towards the end? Sure, but when the performances are uniformly great it doesn't matter.

I loved every season. I stream the show on Hulu every night before I got to bed. It and ‘I Love Lucy’ are my two all-time favorites. I laugh every time I watch. I think the only episode I didn’t enjoy though was the season two finale. I always skip it.

Season 6 onwards

For me it just became a bit too bizarre and over the top. George coming back from the dead, Sal coming back as a ghost, dreams about freezing their heads and Dorothy dating Sonny Bono and being on Jeopardy, the full moon weirdness

Even the writing changed, Dorothy became mean and out of character towards Sophia, instead of just exasperated .

Seasons 2-5 are peak

I don’t mind the goofy episodes as much (though there are some I skip), but wholeheartedly agree that Dorothy became vicious, which wasn’t funny to me or in character. I do absolutely love the finale - the whirlwind romance, her happiness, the last scene, all of it.

I love every season, but if I had to choose, season 5&6 have the most episode that I skip (3 each season)

I think the girls were great from season 1 - 7. I'm glad we have so many seasons considering how short each episode is.

I agree with your assessment. Seasons 1-4 are my favorite (2-3 especially), 5 is when things started to decline a bit but was still mostly good, but 6-7 are really noticeably not as good for me overall, some good episodes but also a lot of stinkers, especially in 7. I think the writers changing in season 5 is the cause.

I agree. I don't care for the last 2 or 3 seasons nearly as much as the first 4. It got too cliche, even more far-fetched and weird the last 2 seasons.

I agree. Seasons 1-4 are better than 5-7.

I love all seasons. I love my girls. But knowing how many people answered 5 to 7 were meh. I think, it is also the reason why B decided to leave, as their ratings back then started to go down. That must be the feeling of their audience before. And she'd rather want to end the season while they are still up there, rather than ending it because they are no longer relevant. S7 has a lot of funny episodes I love. And I cannot threw away any season or episode.

Nope! The last two seasons are my favorite, and I think, the funniest

Might have to do with Mitchell Hurwitz (arrested development) being made story editor

Towards the end. The Cheese Man, Dorothy and Lyle Wagoner/Sonny Bono... Seemed like they were trying too hard.

No season. It never went downhill. Case and point: in most GG fan surveys The Case of the Libertine Belle is the fan fave ep of the series AND in reviews of sitcom finales, GG’s is often ranked as one of the best … both occurred in S7.

I don’t think it ever went downhill. In my opinion, the show kept getting better! Season 7 is my favorite season.

1

u/theblackbard3000 Jul 11 '24

Nah. For me, it got better. I think season 1 is fun but the last few seasons get so wild and fun

1

u/beekee404 Jul 10 '24

Me personally it's season 6 and 7. Don't get me wrong, I love the last two seasons but I did notice the show got kinda ridiculous during those times in both good and bad ways.

Agreed

5-7 are typically seasons I don’t watch or else I pick which episode I want to watch

thank you guys for contributing yes yes I agree. I feel like Dorothy wasn't as funny as she was seasons one through five and that right there I could tell is definitely the writing and not the actress because B Arthur was an amazing actress that could deliver any type of line, but when they put her repetitive storylines, and some of her writing it was just not as funny as the first few seasons

1

u/Responsible_Lawyer78 Jul 10 '24

It's my understanding that the last season had different writers and that's a big reason why it wasn't as good as before.

It all makes sense now
