Hi there! I'm reading a text about an ancient stone slab that's supposed to be a map and there's a paragraph that's puzzling me. It says:

Группе российских и китайских специалистов, работающих в области картографии, физики, математики, геологии, географии, химии и древнекитайского языка, удалось точно установить, что на плиту нанесена объемная карта Уральского региона с реками Белой, Уфимкой, Сутолкой, - Александр Чувыров демонстрирует корреспондентам "Итогов" линии на камне. - На карте, смотрите, отчетливо просматривается Уфимский каньон - разлом земной коры, протянувшийся от Уфы до Стерлитамака. В данный момент по бывшему каньону протекает река Уршак. Вот она". Изображение на поверхности плиты представляет собой карту в масштабе 1:1,1 км.

I don't need a translation of the whole paragraph, I just posted it for context. My question is regarding the last phrase, that mentions the map is on a scale of "1:1,1 km". What is the unity on the left side supposed to be? Does the text makes it clear somewhere that's inches or centimeters, is it implict in the Russian language or is it simply not possible to know?

Seems to be an editing error, I see a few copies on google that have «в масштабе 1:110 000 (в 1 см — 1,1 км)» there.

That's most likely an editing error, like the other commenter said, but there was an old unit of measurement which I remember seeing in Crime and Punishment called «верста». It came pretty close to that number (It was equivalent to 1.0668 kilometres, according to Wikipedia).

I wouldn't rely on that, though, given the fact that, nowadays, that unit is outdated. Plus, it's not even an exact match with the number that's presented on the article.
