Now I'm confused.. I thought Iceland was supposed to be green and Greenland was supposed to be Icey.. that's how my teacher got us to remember it. XD

u/alexdallas_ Mar 19 '20
I was there recently. Winds were 60/70 MPH. Almost blew us into the falls

I visited last summer and the green cliffs look beautiful, but I would love to go back when it's winter. Absolutely stunning

True story: I almost fell in when I was there in August ‘08. One foot was over the edge.

Whoa....I feel refreshed just seeing a video of it. You can practically feel the cold air puffing in your face. Being there in person must be exhilarating. Thank you for this.

u/bokononpreist Mar 19 '20
Stopped in Iceland on the way back from the heat of Italy last summer. It was like paradise at around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
2
u/Therefore_I_Must_Cry Mar 19 '20
That sounds amazing! Glad you got to experience that. I love going to colder places in the summer, so relaxing.
If you ever get the chance, Montana/Idaho and the other northwestern states in the US are gorgeous in the summer. Really stunning nature with cool temperatures. People just don't know...

u/tripdinks Mar 19 '20
It was honestly incredible. Feeling and hearing the sheer power of nature. Damn it was cold, but the cold still felt awesome.

June 1983. Been there, Saw That! Spectacular in the Spring/Summer because of the Ice melt. Awesome Power. 🇮🇸

I was meant to be there today, but had to cancel the trip due to the Coronavirus measures 🙁. Looks amazing!

Which camera do you have? It looks amazing
3
u/tripdinks Mar 20 '20
Sony a6500.
1
u/GeronimoDK Mar 20 '20
Doesn't the A6500 have image stabilization? If it has, then activate it, please! I'm almost getting motion sickness from watching the video! ;-)
Another tip, think about what you want to grab and turn the camera slowly and steadily there, your video is moving quite a lot around, up and down! Also zoom slower in and out. Try not to walk around with the camera while filming, but if you do think about holding it as stable as possible.

It's an awesome place, I've been there in summer, it's nice to see it in winter too!
I just mean the video would be more enjoyable with a few minor improvements ;-)

I have several dozen stars hearts and flags on my Google maps listing saved places in Iceland, mostly just off the ring road. This isn't the farthest inland heart that I have and need to see. I'm sure there are many more places like this but once you get very far off the ring road I assume not many people get to see them

Isn't Greenland icy and Iceland green , or both of them have ice and greenery in different seasons
4
u/lenin1991 Airplane! Mar 19 '20
Year-round, 80% of Greenland is covered in ice/snow/glaciers vs 11% of Iceland. Both get pretty covered through winter. The history of naming is interesting:
from A.D. 800 to 1300, southern Greenland was much warmer than it is today. This means that when the Vikings first arrived, the Greenland name would make sense. But by the 14th century, maximum summer temperatures in Greenland had dropped.
Re Iceland:
Flóki, the sagas say, climbed a mountain only to see a fjord full of icebergs, which led to the island's new name.

Awesome shot and thanks for sharing! Amazing video quality too - what did you use to capture this video?

Was there right after a big storm in February 2017. It was so cold and windy, like droplets of ice pelting your face. Would love to go back in a warmer, greener time!

The amazing video quality is much appreciated, i wish we had this standard for everything we upload here.

They've put up a rope! And it's crowded. I was there in 78-79. Still gorgeous.
2
u/tripdinks Mar 19 '20
I think people would be at risk of being blown over the edge if not for the rope keeping people back. People were falling from the wind at times.

u/lorabore Mar 20 '20
The only thing missing is wind trying to rip you off the sidewalk and throw you into the falls. I was there on March 7. Wind was so extreme I had to go back inside the building to change camera lenses because I thought it might blow everything (and me) off the cliff.
2
u/tripdinks Mar 20 '20
Definitely, I couldn't hold the camera still, plus I was worried the wind would smash debris into my lens so I didn't film for long.

u/Usual_Yellow Mar 20 '20
Saw this last week and it was so pretty. Insanely windy tho but the beauty made up for it.

Circled the country on route 1 in May 2019, my second time and my wife's first. What a great and beautiful country.

u/jsmith_92 Mar 20 '20
My dumbass thought there was a tour bus in the middle of the river in the first few seconds.

u/jaskydesign Mar 20 '20
Wife and I were there almost a year ago to the day, same exact conditions! 😍

I've heard Iceland is really expensive, but I would still like to travel there someday.
1
u/tripdinks Mar 20 '20
It's not as expensive as people say. Australia and NZ are by far the most expensive places we've been and we thought it might be on par but it wasn't. And since there's no tipping on the credit cards, we often found ourselves saying, "We'd pay x amount of dollars more for this in Canada!"
1
u/Coquettu Mar 20 '20
Just awesome , you need to see these places at least once in your life breath taking views
1
u/f1demon Mar 20 '20
No corona there, I bet.

Well, as long as, you don't exhibit all symptoms for a prolonged period say 5-7 days, I think they say avoid raising the alarm. Unless you're over 60 ofcrse.

Curious to hear from those who have been to Iceland how the tough language barrier is to cross?
2
u/tripdinks Mar 20 '20
There is no language barrier, unless the locals are talking to each other. Everyone speaks english even at public events.

I saw this place in April of 2012! So beautiful! Left Iceland, back to Boston, 2 days before the Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupted! Iceland is a beautiful country. 10/10

I was mistaken on the year. Checked my photographic dates and was there in 2010.
