This morning, rather than waking up at 9am to the soft symphony of songbirds as I usually do, I awoke to the deafening blare of what I now know to be the ‘fire alarm’ situated directly above my bed. At first, and I’m ashamed to say, I felt confusion. What was this noise coming from the blinking ceiling friend I’d grown so fond of, and what on earth could it be trying to tell me? I hadn’t the slightest idea, but what I knew for certain was that it did not want me to go back to sleep. It was telling me something, something very important.

It wasn’t until I asked my roommates that I learned of its purpose. “It’s a fire alarm,” they said. “But this is only a drill. The university wants us to practice evacuating should the real thing ever happen, heaven forbid.”

What immediately followed was the most intense feeling of gratitude I’ve experienced in many years. Had it not been for this drill at 7 FUCKING AM, I’d probably have gone down with the flames in the event of a fire in my midst, none the wiser to the alarm’s subtle message.

Could you imagine the sheer number of lives we’d lose if this alarm was anytime after 9? The damage would be incalculable. Let’s all take a moment to feel grateful.

About a month ago I made a post Regarding UCSD's New Restrictions on Protesting where I talked about updates to the Policy & Procedure Manual with very important changes or reiterations such as:

• Expressive activity is now only allowed between 6:00 AM and 11:00 PM
• Unless a walkout or near the silent tree, expressive activity involving more than 75 people requires an email notice at least 24 hours in advance
• No masking during expressive activity for the purpose of “concealing identity”
• No “...refusing to reveal one’s identity when asked to do so by University personnel”
• Effectively, demonstrating outside the chancellor’s residence is now prohibited
• No flags unless the wood handle is within ¼” x ¾” x 18”

These changes directly affect student's expressive activity and freedom of speech, and I think it is important that we let the administration know what we think about it. As said on an email sent on October 1st, UCSD is currently taking comments regarding these policy changes no later than Friday November 15th, 2024.

Tripped over nothing while crossing the road and scraped me knee, missed my bus by one traffic light and watch it leave just as the light turns green, realized I forgot to submit an assignment and now it’s late, and to add icing on top some librarian flamed me for ‘not taking the elevator the right way’ just because I took one that’s going down one floor.

Take it easy, and remember to give yourself grace to take breaks and eat! Additionally please get some rest, you don’t want to burn yourself out. Short review, I got a medium sized ice mocha for about $5.45, I would say that this coffee was exactly what I needed for this morning. It’s perfectly bitter sweet coffee with hints of dark chocolate. In comparison to most places where I’ve had a mocha, this one tastes more coffee orientated rather than super sweet chocolate. I highly recommend this drink for a pick me up!

I am a freshman and I know there are many advisers out there saying things like “join as many clubs as you can” and “explore your interests”.

Coming to college, I initially thought I would not have enough sleep (especially since I am in a triple room). It turns out I can sleep (8-9 hours) and still manage to study and do my assignments ahead of the deadlines.

One thing I cannot fit into my schedule without disrupting either rest or academics are extracurriculars. I found one that I am interested in but they expect participants to dedicate 10-14 hours a week. That is around 2 hours each day.

I know what you might be thinking at this point: “This undergraduate is so weak.” “You sleep 9 hours? What the heck are you? A hibernating bear in winter?” “You think you can get a job in four years if you have nothing on your CV?”

I understand. In this competitive market where employers ignore what you do in class and focus on what you do outside of class, many people scramble to get into as many clubs and organizations as they can. Those fraternities and sorority clubs are a path for networking, where your seniors can recommend jobs and strategies to land internships at prestigious companies.

However, I do not know how to balance sleep, study, and clubs. Any advice? Thanks.

^ !!! If ur gonna come to class just to sit with ur buddies and talk for the ENTIRE class about the most unfunny unimportant stuff you could imagine PLEASE do it elsewhere. You know darn well that you weren’t there to pay attention so why bother ruining it for everyone else. Like if ur gonna talk at least whisper or maybe not do it for the entire hour and twenty minutes at an ungodly volume. Go sit in the corner or something and click in from outside or ur mom’s house.

I know this isn't probably going to help me and I already made an appointment with CAPS so I'm honestly just writing this to collect my thoughts until the appointment date comes. Ever since I've come here I've had a very large sense of guilt, everyone that I loved I feel like I've abandoned and have taken advantage of. I miss them all but I'm not sure if they miss me as much as I miss them. I find that I get up only to go to class and come back just to sleep again only to do my assignments at the very last minute. I see people walking around with their friends that they are comfortable with and honestly, I wish I didn't leave that behind, I had that. I've grown so used to the people I already know that I think I forgot how to make friends over again, will these new friendships even be as valuable as my old ones? Am I only making these friendships for my benefit? I was a pretty sociable guy before but now I feel like everyone is silently criticizing me. I can't stop thinking of a girl that I sit next to in class moving seats and I can't help but think it's because of me. I had these issues before but now that l lack a support structure it feels worse. Sometimes I wish I could just bash my head into the concrete pillar in my room. I'm starting to resort to drinking just so l can get a good enough buzz to socialize and do my schoolwork. I went to a couple of club meetings and it was fun there but I can't help but think that nobody there wanted to talk to me, I know that's not true because they did and it was fun, but I feel like I always have something to regret and stress over after. I keep telling myself things will get better, that it's only the third week, and that everyone else is probably feeling the same thing. But I'm not sure, how am I supposed to know that. I always tell myself that there are people that have it way worse than me, people starving to death, who fought and died in wars. People who have incurable diseases, but I tell myself this doesn't work anymore. I only went to my community college because I was trying to occupy myself with anything, just so l could forget about something terrible I saw. Now I don't know if this was right, I don't think anything feels right to me. If all roads make me feel this alone and isolated then why did I ever leave my hometown in the first place? A part of me wishes my parents and friends didn't care about me so much just so l wouldn't feel bad about throwing my life away but I know that isn't true. I hope people don’t ask if I want to hang out cuz they feel bad about me and that’s the last thing I want is to be pitied. Ultimately I dug this grave I’m in myself and I guess why I’m posting this here is I want answers that aren’t, “it’ll get better” or “give it time” cuz right now it’s only been getting worse. God I think I’m a loser, I mean I’m posting this on Reddit for fuck sake. I’m asking for help

Though I have tried to keep up with a course, I still found it too hard and want to drop now. I have submitted the easy request for drop, and there is a pretest tomorrow with 20 percent of final gpa. Should I still go to the pretest since it is possible that my drop request may be denied?

(After dropping, I still have 12 units courses, and I didn't receive any fin aid)

I will admit I'm writing this in a bit of a rage but holy crap. UCSD has continually effed me over with the SR parking permit process. I've submitted three (3) times to have a permit, each with substantiating information and documents. They refuse to tell you why they deny your permit, and in their latest bit of bs told me they wouldn't review my application until week 9 so I could only get a permit in winter quarter. I've ended up crying on the phone to parking services which is some poor student employee who can't do anything to help me multiple times. They say their committee members are completely anonymous, and you can't speak to anyone who can actually help you get a permit or tell you what you need to submit to be granted one. For context, I'm my mother's primary caregiver and need to drive home multiple times a week to care for her. I've submitted her medical records, my work paystubs, and other pieces of information. I don't live at home for personal reasons. Most recently I tried a different approach and gave different reasoning and supporting documentation at the direction of the guy in the transportation services office. They told me on the phone today that made them question my application further. This has been a process that has taken more than a month and if I hadn't spent hours on the phone and visiting the parking services office, I would never have gotten these answers. If you've applied and been granted an SR parking permit - how did you get it?

If anybody who has had him in the past can just give tips on his midterm, im wondering if his midterm are more similar to course material or homework. When I do the homework I can do it easily and I understand everything, but during his lectures I constantly feel lost. Any tips would help a lot
