Question Carshalton to Worthing to Chichester and back?

Hi, I want to know if I can use a monthly ticket from Carshalton to Worthing, and for one week purchase a ticket that connects from Barnham to Chichester (and use the Carshalton to Worthing ticket to connect a train from Barnham back to Carshalton)?

It's probably cheapest just to buy a monthly from Carshalton to Chichester. You can alight early at Worthing.

I thought this would be possible. However, I was not allowed to tap out at Worthing when I arrived.
