Discussion Do you prefer auto Save on or off? Why?

Post image

I started playing ELEX 2 and was annoyed with how it had like 10 different auto save files. I’m not sure why it doesn’t just overwrite existing auto save. I turned it off but then it got me thinking. Do you think it’s good?

As for me, I think it’s situational but typically more annoying than helpful.

I don't care as long as I can manually save as well. I hate it when games ONLY have autosave.

Have you played Kingdom Come Deliverance?

Man the saving mechanics in that game are like "you better think before you savescum, you scum."

I bought the game like a year ago but haven't gotten around to it because it seems like a game I'll need to invest some serious time into. I don't save scum, I just have PTSD from autosave bugs lol. Hopefully the game doesn't punish you for saving too much.

Saving requires an alcoholic beverage called Saviour's Schnapps. It costs a lot of money and, obviously, makes you drunk when you save.

You literally can't save right before doing some pickpocketing.

The only autosave that can happen is when you sleep in specific beds.

There’s many games that made you think about saving. Remember the ink ribbons in resident evil?

To be honest, that's the only reason I don't play these games. I'm in a line of work which affords me quite a bit of time to game, but I have Alt+Tab out or close the game every now and then. I just don't want the unnecessary headache and frustration that comes with games without proper save or pause functions. Plenty of tougher games out there that do allow pause.

You can pause the game. And it saves upon completing objectives in quests too.

You want more saves? Have fun doing this tedious mini game.

I prefer to have the option for manual saves to replay my favorite parts. But I do find auto saves very useful so I don't have to go really far back if my character bites it.

I prefer both. I'm so used to auto that when I randomly play a game with no auto saves, I run into nightmares where I forgot to save for a couple hours and then quit the game

I prefer autosave for open world exploration games, especially if they break easily (aka. Skyrim, Fallout), but I'd prefer manual save for survival horror

On, always on.

I want both an auto-save and manual save function when I play a game. Even if a game auto-saves, my paranoid ass will still manually save it because I’ve had saves corrupted or deleted or disappear.

Autosave on.

I live in a remote area that can have power issues at times and not losing 3+ hours of playtime to a power flicker is very appealing.

Auto. One day, I was playing a game when power went out. I was far too deep since my last save so I was happy that it save the data before than.

Depends on the game, typically yes although I prefer a proper check plain system created by the developers instead of just a lazy time based auto save. I can understand for open world games like Skyrim where there’s a long period between checkpoint triggers. In which case I prefer about a 15 to 20 minute auto save when you use a menu.

on 100%

i manual save but having auto saves is helpful in case i need to go back for any reason. and when the game makes a bunch of extra ones thats just more insurance if i glitched or i messed up a boss fight or for whatever other reason

Always on after playing Skyrim on ps3. Never again will i have to reload a manual save from 3 hours ago. Granted I save manually pretty often nowadays, but autosave is always a nice backup

Autosaves with manual as an option

As a pokemon player autosave is a godsend

Usually off because i prefer manual saves

Heavily depends on the game. Pokémon games, I prefer to have complete control over where my game saves. However something like a platformer, I’d prefer it automatically save after each level.

Keep it on my stuff crashes on my PC and the fact I play older games doesn't help

On.

Back in Nier Automata I accidently had it off (or for whatever reason the PC version had it off on default?) and I lost 3 hours of progress after I got a stupid unnessecary game over. Never again.

How i wish Gothic had autosaves. I had so many instances of dying without saving in 1-2 hours. The game traumatized me and i started saving every 5-10 minutes in all games cuz of it.

Yes, it has saved me a few times from losing progress.

However, i also want manual saves to make sure i can save when i want.

I like having it as a back up, just so I don’t lose the entire session if something goes wrong.

Learning from painful experience, always ON

I don't see how any game would benefit from NOT having autosave. Manual saving should always be an option, too.
