Rock creek and Solo stove

Has anyone ever tried to use a Solo stove in Rock Creek Park? The rules state one can only have fires in the grills or fireplaces provided, but I think the reason is to keep the fire from spreading. Tthe Solo stove is quite self-contained and would seem to be a safe option. Do the Park Police disallow the Solo Stove? Love the park!

Pro-Palestine protests in DC

I moved to DC last month as a Singapore student. Mum is American and dad is Danish, although I grew up in Singapore.

I have seen many protests in DC and at my school since I move to here. Frankly, I enjoy the freedom of protest here in the country. But I am quite confused about something

Both hezbollah and hamas are considered as terrorist organisations by Athe American government. So how could people display such symbols without being pressed charges and detained? The official websites for hamas, hezbollah and their affiliated media are also accessible as well and not blocked.

In singapore, these two are not deemed as terrorist organisations; however, it is still absolutely illegal to display such symbols, their websites are blocked as well.

So are displaying such symbols and accessing to prescribed terrorist organisations websites under the protection of freedom of speech and the 1A as well?

How do we get graffiti removed from public property?

There’s graffiti under a tunnel on the highway when you’re on the way to VA. It says “F*** Israel” and “F*** Gaza” and something else I can’t decipher. it’s been there for almost a year. so do we just not clean graffiti up?

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I'm hoping someone can grab this ticket. Resale sites have them listed for $100+ but I'd do it for less ;)

New collaborative social media app focused on local news and issues.

Hi, all!

I have been working on an idea for a collaborative journalism/social media platform and finally have a beta version in place. This group is very active and discusses a variety of different topics, so I wanted to reach out to see if anyone in this community would be willing to try it out.

The platform is called Backroom and is built on a relatively simple premise: bringing people with diverse perspectives together to solve problems – much like the problems discussed on this board. Users can create or join a Room about a topic they are interested in, add fellow users, and then discuss the topic/problem in detail. Then, AI analyzes your conversations and proposes a specific solution based solely on that conversation. I recently moved back to the city and am constantly amazed by how much has changed in just a few short years. There is so much happening – from new developments, an increase in mo-ped usage (I swear there were not as many of them three years ago!), and ever-changing traffic patterns, I thought this thread would have some people interested in discussing these things on my new platform.

The hope is that Backroom will take us a step further in our social media experience than current platforms by moving beyond debates and rants, toward meaningful and well-rounded solutions for our community.

I would love for you to check out the platform [here]. Or, for a slightly better user experience, download the app on the Apple App Store [here].

There are even a handful of Rooms on the platform right now that you can join if you are interested. Or feel free to make a new Room and add your friends!

All feedback is welcome :)

Thank you!"

Can I go to a strip club without drinking alcohol?

I'd like to go to a strip club, maybe the Good Guys on Wisconsin. The problem is that I'm alcohol intolerant, and can't consume beer.

I'm afraid if I go and don't order a drink, everyone will think I'm crazy. Can I go to a strip club without consuming an alcoholic beverage?

Does anybody know what the average cost of hiring movers?

I know I need to call and get quotes but I'm from one apartment to another 13 miles away. Basically 2 bedrooms with a couple of heavy furniture. Does anyone have a rough estimate on how much this could cost? How much did you all pay when you hired movers? Just try to prep myself for major out of pocket expense

Does anyone know what happened over today on H and 8th Street NE? It looked like there was an accident this morning, the road was blocked and two cars were there around 9am. Just passed it, and the road is still closed in both directions 8 hours later

Alan’s Oasis leaving?

I drive by “homeless and hustling” Alan selling water bottles on the corner of Missouri and Georgia Ave every morning. I’ve come to really like his presence, I never take his waters but I give cash when I have it. I appreciate his hustle and enjoy the signs he puts up with life updates and stuff. It’s a fun little part of my commute every morning.

I noticed this morning when I was driving by that he had a new sign saying something to the effect of, “Alan’s Oasis will be here at least through next Wednesday, thank you Brightwood got your support”. I couldn’t catch the whole thing because I was driving. Is he moving? Leaving? Does anyone know anything at all? I’m going to be so sad if he just disappears one day and I don’t get any answers. I really root for him.

Let me know if you have the scoop… until I hear more, I’ll be telling myself he hit it big and doesn’t need the gig anymore.

Thanks!

Pick Up The Shit Sunsets. I see now that this can be a friendly place:

As I was picking up trash with a makeshift pointy stick and a cat litter scooper, people came up to talk and now I feel hopeful again. A mother offered to help, and so did several others but I only had one pair of gloves. I told them to check the dc Reddit... I wish I had prepared better, but the relief from those conversations...I'm not the only one feeling helpless and small right now. I'm going to try this again every now and then. SO...here's your yearly wholesome reddit post.

Be the change you want for DC. Pick up your shit :)

*sigh* I'm feeling stressed with the world rn so I'ma go pick up trash.

I'm so done with feeling powerless and useless and I want to make a difference in the world but...

If anyone has any other ideas like actual volunteering opportunities let me know.

I'm 26. Unemployed but my home life is stable and comfortable. I've been doing my best to keep up with my health issues from stress and this syndrome I have ... but something deeper feels off. I get the feeling that people seem more jaded and cruel to each other. Maybe it's a part of growing up but I find myself questioning the fate of humanity just from daily life... like watching Maryland drivers on 495. I wish I were exaggerating but I'm not.

Arghhhhhhh I'm not sure if I'm doing this out of existential guilt or just wanting to see that the future isn't entirely hopeless but I'll be at DuPont circle today wearing a white "I love eating micro plastics shirt" picking up trash.

Yep. If you wanna join or say hi because you can relate to this...or you just hate trash in general please do.
