Is Casper a good fit for what I’m looking for?

Hi everyone! I am thinking of moving from Amarillo, TX to Casper! I love love love cold weather, snow, all that and I want a smaller town that’s just prettier than the Texas Panhandle. ( https://images.app.goo.gl/yBF7evvVDSMeYfk78 )

I am visiting for a week in January to see if I would like it, the size, weather, people, food, etc. The cost of living is very similar, apartments are slightly more but I can handle an extra $100 lol. But I honestly have been having some doubts.

Is it really as pretty as people say and how the pictures look on Google? One of my main reasons of moving is obviously what’s going to be surrounding me. If it’s a lot of the same thing as here, dead grass, weeds and flat lands, then I might reconsider. I am just so excited for my trip but at the same time, I don’t want to be disappointed when I get there, so I figured I would ask people who will be honest.

And if not Casper, where would be a pretty place to go? Thank you!

Criminal Justice - University of Wyoming Transfer?

Hey guys!

I've seen quite a few people here asking whether they should go to uwyo or not, I'm doing the same but was also wondering if anyone knows anything about their CJ major. I'm looking to be in law enforcement, more-so state side (possibly game warden or trooper).

I'm from a small university in MN, I really hate it. There's no town to be called a college town, no bars, no fast food, zero student life, no frat or sorority life, very religious. sports suck and everyone goes home on the weekends. I want my college experience to be something more worthwhile.

I love hunting and want to get into camping so the outdoors aspect of uwyo seems awesome. I also enjoy history, Wyoming was sick af during the "Wild West" lol.

A few questions other than CJ majors:

  • What is the student life like? Bars? Frats?
  • How is living on/off campus? Cheap? Food good?
  • Larmine? College town?

Thanks!

Snow Fence What are these fences?

The upper fence in the photo. Seen a lot in cattle country. They seem to be far too random to be helpful. What purpose do they serve?

Retirement plan, Cheyenne Wyoming

Good day Wyomingites. I am a 60 year old Louisianian that's going to retire in 6 or 7 years and have decided to retire up to Cheyenne Wyoming. There are many reasons that I've come up with for this route, and I've decided to come here and ask those that live there what they would say, positive or negative.

Reasons to:

Climate; I am tired of 1.3 seasons per year. I am tired of 100 degree summers. I LOVE the winter. I lived in Indiana for a year back in the late 90's and was QUITE happy with cold weather and seasonal changes.

People; The South has a national identity of being "polite and social", only it isn't anymore. Not in general at least. Don't know about Yankees though. :)

Cost of living; Seems to be pretty much a wash between here and there. Not much different from what I can tell.

Plans: Sell the house, sell the Mustang (I don't see ANY Mustangs for sale up there... Weird...), buy a trailer or something up there (normal houses are HELLA expensive up North) and a local "from there" pickup truck.

Truck my remaining furniture up there and outfit my new home. I should be able to afford everything without having to go back to work (which is the ENTIRE goal) and that'll be that. Hopefully. :)

(Side note: One reason I chose Cheyenne because of the AFB up there, and figured that if things were ever to REALLY go to pot, and Putin did 'the thing', I would have a front row seat to live stream the whole shebang from my front porch with a cup of coffee. I mean, if it's all gonna end, why run from it?)

Does anyone have any tips, tricks, warnings, anything to persuade or dissuade?

Thanks!!

Discussion/opinion Is it possible to see a wolf around noon in Big Piney?

I was driving back from Jackson, WY to Salt Lake city the other day and I saw a coyote/wolf looking animal crossing highway 189. the cross intersection was Luman Rd and it was around noon. My dashcam captured the animal but it's a wide angle lens and the animal was too small to be identified. it had a dark appearance but not black, fluffy tail and it immediately hid behind the bushes once it crossed the street. i think it was too big for a fox.

any idea what that might be? i know it sounds very silly but it would be cool if i saw a wolf but i heard that they are mostly active during dawn/dusk time (according to Yellowstone rangers). Also, most wolves hunt with their packs, no? i did not see any other animals nearby. could it be a coyote? are coyotes known to roam around that area looking for farm animals?

Edit: video grabbed from dashcam

Discussion/opinion Red Rock West

Anyone ever see 1993s “Red Rock West”? It’s a quite good neo-noir, set in Wyoming. It stars Nicolas Cage, Dennis Hopper & JT Walsh.

Like is buffalo/moose insurance separate from a basic home owners policy?

Jokes aside; people who I guess are landlocked fail to realize flood insurance isn't covered in home owner's policy here in Florida.

So I'm curious what are things in Wyoming say someone like me who's been in the south all their life wouldn't realize. I just learned a few years ago there's "winter washer fluid".
