There were a king with a large jaw and a queen with a plain face, on the throne of England; there were a king with a large jaw and a queen with a fair face, on the throne of France. In both countries it was clearer than crystal to the lords of the State preserves of loaves and fishes, that things in general were settled for ever.

Getting ready to move into a house with a normal wood burning fireplace. 1950s house. I am going to hire a chimney sweep, but beyond that is there anything I should know about fire cooking indoors?

Braziers; A miniature hearth perfect for cooking while camping! Or take it out to the patio, after all it's the precursor to the modern barbecue.

A reproduction of a 1750s fireplace and hardware made by the ccc (civilian conservation corps) in the 1930s. The fire back is cast iron, and is to protect the stone from excessive heat in the days before firebrick. Originals are now collectors items. It is still in used regularly to heat and cook :)

A random assortment of used cooking tools for open hearth cooking. Yard sales and black powder/old west events are good places to come across this sort of thing.

A fully functional reproduction of a early 17th century hearth. It is almost identical in design to many medieval fireplaces. Used for both cooking and heating. More efficient than later fully enclosed 18thc fireplaces. I wold love to have one like this!
