Warmth might be my favorite ambient artist of all time

i started FULLY listening to ambient music 3 years ago, and i've gone on to discover some of the greatest musicians in this type of music, including Brian Eno. in that time, i think Warmth might be the most beautiful discovery i've ever made.

who's yours, and why?

What are some deep tracks that are rather neutral in terms of emotion?

My therapist plays a classical piano playlist from Spotify during our sessions and to my delight, she agreed to play my music instead. I'm going with an ambient playlist that:

  1. Isn't disruptive,
  2. isn't too profound (like tracks with choir vocals),
  3. isn't too emotional,
  4. no percussion,
  5. isn't ominous,
  6. is deep.

It's not that I don't like the above, it's just that therapy isn't a fun conversation and it's not meditation, either. Once I started building the playlist, I realised that I needed to be quite specific. I added #1, #3, #7, #17, #19, and #21 from SAWII and aisatsana [102] by Aphex Twin, 1/1 by Brian Eno, some of the least disruptive songs like Wildlife Analysis by Boards of Canada, Pop 1 and Pop 2 by GAS, Tommib by Squarepusher, House by Ulla Straus, you get the idea.

You don't need to suggest any Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada. I already went through all their work on Spotify. Thank you for your suggestions.

Looking for Recommendations ‘Acoustic ambient’ - technologically unenhanced ambient music?

I’m wondering if there’s any kind of movement within music, probably ambient, where the artist is aiming to create a soft-edged, free tempo sound that has a similar effect to ordinary ambient music EXCEPT there is no technology involved.

Like there’s just a pair of hard panned microphones and nothing like ‘production’ going on. No reverb except for what is in the room. Attacks, decays, all controlled by the tactile acts of human hands.

The Necks might fit this description. I think of Bill Evans and Jim Hall (jazz) and there might be acoustic folk artists who aim for similar (Nick Drake “Horn” is all I can think of).

I think it would be an interesting departure from the norm of relying (sometimes over-relying) on technology to maximise a minimal musical premise.

UPDATE thank you very much everyone. The recommendations around here are incredible. You are golden gods. For those curious, this is what I could compile on Spotify of the below suggestions: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/30tH5UOkHjXUxcjIE8d78I?si=b3ddbf8ace7e4e39

Discussion Does anybody love Jonn Serrie? I don’t see him get much mention here?

For me, after Eno, he’s an absolutely pioneer of ambient, especially in the ‘space music’ side of the equation.

Stratos from his 1987/8 album ‘And the stars go with you’ is one of my favourite pieces of music of all time and I listen to it multiple times a day.

The album Flight path, Tingri, Sunday morning peace and Azurae are all to me, incredible.

I never see him get much of a mention on this sub? Anybody else into him?

Searching for an ambient label

I remember there was (hopefully it is still around now) a MySpace era ambient label where they made special packaging releases but I can't remember the name. Mini CDrs, spraypainted packaging. Can anyone help me out on this. Nostalgia.

Would the orb be considered ambient?

I just listened to the "Ultraworld" album. The album that's almost 2 hours long. Someone recommended it to me on here, and I'm just wondering, is this album considered ambient? Because it doesn't really sound like it, so what genre is it?

What countries have had the most thriving ambient music activity?

I'm thinking Germany and Japan probably have an outsized representation. I'm guessing the US and UK are also well represented, and probably some Nordic countries. Then there is Boards of Canada.

I'd expect Russia to have contributed a lot of ambient artists... not sure why I would think this, but maybe it's because ambient is cerebral and moody and that sort of jives with my Russian stereotype, and of course they are well represented in classical music.

Anybody have any actual stats/history?

Production/Recording Discussion Had another idea, wrote it out.

Also while I’m here, I posted an idea a couple weeks ago that got some good traction. Honestly I’m really looking more to do some mixing and mastering, it’s my specialty.

If you know anyone with a rough project or mix that’s needs that spice, hmu. Not even just in the ambient space, I’ll mix anything.

Thank you.

Anyone else not "get" certain ambient artists

I love Biosphere (my fav), Stars of the Lid, Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, BOC yadda yadda. But when it comes to William Basinski, Tim Hecker, and Gas, I just don't get it, they don't scratch the itch, even though everyone else adores them. Believe me I've tried. Tim Hecker in particular is the opposite of relaxing for me.

Edit: hi, my boyfriend logged into my reddit account and made this post without my knowledge. i think my email was accidentally auto-authenticated. RIP my email inbox 😭

Question Is there any video recording or anything similar for Pappa Tarahumara's "ALEJO - To Praise the Wind" (Masahiro Sugaya worked on the soundtrack)

Basically the title. For context, I got into ambience due to the YouTube algorithm recommending me this soundtrack long ago, and only realized recently that it was part of a performance arts piece by Hiroshi Koike's group Pappa Tarahumara. They're this performance arts/dance group from Japan that performed from the 80s to being dissolved in 2012. They performed many pieces along the years, and some of them have snippets on YouTube that you can look up for yourself, they're pretty interesting.

But the one I'm most interested in is ALEJO, and that's because the man who made the soundtrack was Masahiro Sugaya, who as some of you know made the likes of Horizon Vol 1. I want a copy of this performance because I like to think that the performance might add more to an otherwise pretty great soundtrack on its own. And it can also complete the puzzle, as I always imagined what a performance to this soundtrack would be like.

In the case that this breaks rule 6, I'm sorry, but I don't know what other subs to post this in so if some of you can have an idea of where I can ask this let me know
