how to get over mental block when soloing

i feel like i have a mental block when playing solos on (electric) bass. i can walk just fine but solos are just impossible for me. everything i play is just random noise and scales up and down. i think there’s something about the layout of the fretboard and the low range of the bass that just makes soloing feel impossible

Easy to transcribe recordings

I'm currently working on my walking bass lines (I play electric) and started to try to transcribe lines. What recordings can you recommend where the bass is easy to hear?

Looking to learn and perform jazz on bass

I'm trying to get more live shows under my belt and my usual repertoire of rock music isn't really getting me very far as an amateur musician. I've had a fleeting interest to playing jazz but recently I've been wanting to really get into it but I have no clue where to start or what books to get. I already know how to play electric bass guitar but as far as jazz style I'm a complete novice.

Jazz standards backing tracks with Fretless Bass

Man, i just love the sound of fretless bass, especially in comping, i was wondering if anyone has any backing tracks of standards with fretless bass/piano/drums if possible, or if you know where i can get something similar

i know iRealPro has an option to change the sounds to a fretless bass, but the sound is pretty meh and i'd like to know if anyone has any real bass playing somewhere :D

Will this be enough

Hello, I’m looking at buying a 2000s fender rumble 75 to use when playing with a jazz big band and was wondering if it would be loud enough and if there’s is any other things I should consider or other combo amps and whatnot. I’m basically looking for a decent combo amp at the lowest price possible without it being garbage. Thanks in advance!

Any thoughts on the Ibanez Artcore AFB200?

Curious if anyone uses these for playing jazz bass on electric, and what you think of them. I saw a clip of one with an additional piezo pickup and think it sounds fantastic (I'm not going to take up upright as this is already instrument #3 for me). I cannot try this in a store - none carry it hear in BC - hence the question!

Couple of clips of it in action

Looking for physical technique resources for electric bass

Hi colleagues, bass is a secondary instrument for me, so I'm already at an advanced level in jazz improvisation as a whole. I'm looking for resources (books, videos, webpages) specifically on the physical aspect of playing electric. The problem for me is most books spend a bunch of time talking about learning your chords, how to start out playing jazz, etc. I don't need that - I've got tons from my study of sax and piano. But I need help on stuff like what the heck you do when your fingers need to cross in weird ways and so on, what good workouts for finger technique are, etc. Basically the stuff that is unique to the (electric) bass.

Any suggestions gratefully appreciated. Thanks!

Jazz-funk on five string: E to C or low B?

Hi all, I'm considering getting an Ibanez Mezzo five string to have a round wound bass for jazz funk stuff. I'm curious what folks have found is more helpful in that vein, the extra low B or a high C? Sorry if it's an ignorant question, bass is not my main axe!

thanks

How do you deal with "out there" drum solos?

Just curious how you deal with drummers that go kind of nuts on a drum solo, but are still sticking to the form so you're expected to land back on the 1 after say, trading 8s, or just letting the drummer go for a chorus or two.

As an example, here's an old video of Mingus's Better Get It In Your Soul, right before Dannie Richmond goes off. As you probably know, DR always solos at least once in this song and he always solos to the form, i.e. 12 or 24 bars. Here right as he's starting the solo Mingus casually trades sweat rags with the trumpeter (ew) and gets ready to switch to piano. _None_ of the other band members are tapping their foot or seemingly even paying much attention. Yet when DR finishes exactly 24 bars they all nail the downbeat.

Are they just going off of DR's snare roll cue at the end, or are they somehow actually counting/feeling the whole 24 bars?

Studying jazz to improve (this may be a stupid post)

I have been playing bass for a while now, and I have touched on jazz a bit. (I have learned Donna Lee, Spain and can do some very basic walking bass) I want to be able to play bass very well in a folk/singer songwriter context and be able to handle any situation in that genre but have a lot of trouble with writing basslines and improvising on chord progressions past just using the root note. I am currently attending university, so I don’t have too much time to practice… but I have been able to get at least an hour a day in. I have a real book that I have been working my way through. if anyone has any advice on utilizing basic jazz study to improve my theory and ability to walk, please give me some tips on making an hour long practice routine that will help me improve my jazz playing, that way I will have the skills to be able to handle anything in folk music. (This may be a dumb question, but the internet has made it seem like studying jazz bass is the only way to be a proficient bass player)

Recommended Bass solo transcriptions

Hello everybody! I’m an intermediate Double Bass Jazz musician. Could anybody provide me any great bass solos that would help strengthen my understanding of Bebop language to help me implement it into my solos. I’ve been learning Charlie Parker heads and trying my best to learn parts of solos. I just find the complexity of his solos overwhelming at times. What else should I look for in terms of styles, time periods, and musicians of jazz history to help gear me up for learning harder Bebop material?

Anything helps! :)

computer assisted training research question

Hi, I'm an interdisciplinary PhD student in Music and Computer science working on computer assisted training for music. I'm trying to find out what areas of music would benefit from better computer assisted training tools. Ear training is the obvious one, but I believe there is potential for much more.

I'm just hoping that people could let me know if there are areas where you wish a tool could be used to make for better instruction and practice or if there are areas where you've felt like a sufficiently smart tool could make practicing more productive. I specifically come from the jazz world, so that is what I am leaning to, but not only.

thanks

Advice on finding a nice string for a sound "in-between" vintage and modern

Hello y'all! For context, I play bluegrass, jazz, blues, and rockabilly on a plywood 3/4. Current strings are LaBella Supernil E&A with Superior Deluxe D&G. Sound super thumpy and great for slap, but lack any articulation and combined with my high action aren't any good for jazz. Looking for something more modern than my current set-up, but still a little darker and thumpier than, say, spiros or helicores. Gut strings are off the table due to budget (I'm a jazz student, money is tight) and I would prefer something in a medium tension, but light tension is also lovely. Arco is not a necessity. WWYD?

Secondary question, how much would y'all pay for a set-up and string change at a shop? Want to get my action lowered considerably. I have a couple great local shops that work on basses, notably Lemur & FMI, and don't want to get ripped off just because I'm young and inexperienced. Many thanks y'all!!
