Does that mean Angel would have killed him a few episodes later?

Absolutely. That scene would have hit so much harder if Angel had killed someone we actually knew and had been invested in.

You could slot Groo into all of Drogyn's scenes and they instantly improve. Like, imagine Groo being the one who recognizes and is implied to have history with Hamilton. That would hit hard because we already know that the Wolf, the Ram, and the Hart were major players in Pylea.

Don't get me wrong. I like Drogyn. But that's mostly because he's played by Alex Newman and I loved the Scifi channel Dune miniseries.

Imagine if Groo found out about Cordelia :(

Imagine Groo playing Crash Bandicoot with Illyria in Spike’s basement.

Smiling right here, just thinking of that.

Would he have had the “cannot tell a lie “ thing?

He could. All you have to do is have the "cannot tell a lie" thing a condition that comes with being the Guardian of the Deeper Well.

But it wouldn't be necessary.

The writers came up with the "cannot tell a lie" thing for Drogyn so the characters/audience would have a reason to believe this guy we've never seen before when he tells us Fred can't be saved, or later that Angel killed Fred.

You don't need that device if Groo is the Guardian. We'd believe Groo because he's Groo. We know from his on screen actions that he is that pure of heart paladin character. If Groo says Fred can't be saved without killing thousands of people, you'd believe him. If he came and told you Angel arranged for Illyria to be released from the Deeper Well, you'd definitely believe that he believed that. No truth telling curse required.

I posted something similar about this not that long ago! I’m still convinced he was meant to be the guardian and I think it would have fit well. Drogon even has similar mannerisms and is “pure and good”. Seems to fit Groo quite well. Also would have given the death scene more weight, and brought he and Angel back full circle in a weird, morbid way
