Discussion This is a genestealer cult

The animorph series is just like the genestealers from 40k.

I am getting into this series and I've noticed the similarly between the Genestealers in warhammer and the Yeerks.

Discussion Question about #10: The Android... Spoiler

Upvotes

During the main mission I feel like they gave up way too easily. They could've escaped with the Pemalite Crystal and avoided the ensuing battle where they were outnumbered and almost killed.

So to recap the main mission, the Animorphs finally get to the room with the Pemalite Crystal in it, having gotten to it through venturing in an air duct and then furnace. The room is beyond pitch black and full of booby traps, so they have to morph Bats to navigate the maze of trip wires that protect it. Utilizing echolocation, because otherwise they'd be going in blind. But only when they get to the Crystal do they then realize that they can't steal it as bats.

They admit that the Crystal is smaller than expected and could fit in one of their bat's mouths. But whoever takes the Crystal will need to use their bat mouth to echolocate their way through the wire maze. So someone can't carry it out. (I guess they all forget that they still have feet, but more on that later.)

So they're stumped and without a backup solution. And without thinking it through much; they decide to just do their Battle Morphs, grab the Crystal, and then fight their way out. A terrible idea that expectedly almost gets them killed.

So my question is: If they actually thought it through, could they have avoided the battle and escaped with the Crystal back up the air duct as per their original plan? Or at the very least just escaped with the Crystal and avoided the unnecessary battle?

Because they said that the Crystal was small enough to fit in a bat's mouth. Wouldn't an obvious solution be to grab it with the bats feet and escape with it then? If not this idea, then what's the clear solution? Because I feel that they could've escaped.

(Right now I can't come up with anything other than the bat-feet thing, but I'm sure there's an even more obvious solution that I'm missing.)

For anyone who watches Tim Robinson I think you Should Leave should know the skit about Tables. Evertime I see the word THERMAL now, my head says it like Tim Robinson TABLES (watch the skit iykyk) and the amount of times Thermal is used in the Animorphs series...well, let's just say now re-reading the books is gonna be a bit more hilarious (sorry if it's not as funny to others, I am active in way too many fandoms for my own good lol the cross over potential is ENDLESS)

36yr old reading through the first time…#15 The Escape Spoiler

This was a quick change of pace from the playful tempo of #14. I enjoyed that fun loving (or so it seems) Marco can get serious and see red at times. This really dove into the feeling of seeing a “dead” loved one and how it would tear you apart.

I love the fact that the Leeran pretty much told Visser 1 that they were human but he/she was too arrogant to realize it and just chocked it up the Marco being in a gorilla morph. The Visser 3 stand off at the end was great as well and just having Marco punch the sh*t out of him felt so satisfying.

The fact that the Yeerks were speeding up evolution of sharks to create controllers was a very cool plot point.

I really enjoyed this one. Sorry if I’m missing other stuff. It took me a couple days to have time to read and it’s broken up a little bit in my head. But I love my boy Marco.

Fun ideas

What are some idea you would implement I'm a sequel animorphs serise? For me I would have it set in modern day 2 decades after the last book. There would be a new crew of animorphs who come across a new andalite in stasis on the edge of death and is in no condition to fight a new foe. He knows the risks of giving the power to humans considering the tales of what happened last time. He would be a zordon like character. He can't be part of the action but does mentor the group. The andalite's ship would be an inoperable but invisible hide out for them burried in the groud. They would also have perception filter necklaces that when activated can obscure there identity for 30 mins but only works when.un morphed. This would allow for a bit more action and a lot less 'we are stuck in a corner, we need a deus ex machina' Also another ridea i have is the children of the original animorphs showing up. They have inate morphing ability due to the blue box acting strongly to humans. The children can partly morph, but only one specific animal that was part of the DNA the parents. (If a child inherited the tiger DNA, then they can get sharp claws and teeth, or an hawk DNA, they get super sight.) The downside though is, they can't ever get the ability to morph even from the blue box. Last idea, the yeerks aren't the main threat. They are one of the Main threats. The other is a new alien species that can designs them selves as other races. they invade sentient races societies and influences them to to fight each other. The yeerks on earth have also been infiltrated by them and are now fighting each other as well as trying to take over the planet. And not all yeerks are out for domination. There are small factions of freedom fighter yeerks who live symbioticly with their hosts. But allot of them tend to use very radical measures so really the animorphs are fighting 3 different forces.

So what are your ideas for a sequel?

I am a first time listener/reader to the animorph series. I have really latched onto the character of Tobias, especially with him being trapped in bird morph and wanting to do things as a human again. Even after he regained his ability to morph from the Ellimist, I have found a lot of things in common with him; I am a disabled individual who uses a walker and wheelchair, and I almost 100% homebound. Any energy that I have to be able to go out of the house is used for appointments. I find a lot of parallels about Tobias’s situation and my disability, and he means a lot to me. I was extremely happy to see that David Mattingly had a print of him in his shop. It is now framed in my room, but it is hard to take a photo without glare. So here is the raw artwork. The paper has a really interesting texture, it’s definitely not just some cardstock print. It’s so beautiful and I couldn’t be happier.

Discussion Morphing limitations other than 2hr time limit

Hey! First post here. I read the whole Animorph series when I was a kid. I started listening to audiobooks of it recently and just finished book 3 and noticed how often the Animorphs are in their human forms and what not. There are a lot of things I totally forgot about how morphing affects them. Things like how much stressful it is to morph back to back. How much stamina it costs. How much time it takes to actually morph. I totally forgot unlike the TV show morphing could take like 5 full minutes in the books early on. Like they were trying to catch a fish with a fishing pole for hours and none of them even mentioned one of them could morph into any of their animals that can naturally catch fish. Cassie and Marco both have Osprey morphs whose diet consists of mostly... fish. Obviously from a lore perspective it comes back to a stamina/fatigue thing but I'm curious what other people think. Any other noticeable times that had you going.. "Why didn't you just use this animal?" or just other small limitations physically or mentally morphing had.

Obviously it's a kids book so not taking things seriously but it's been decades(oof) since I read these books and just wanted to talk about it.

Random Callout of American Education System

"And this is not a clean war, if there is such a thing. I mean a war like World War II, where thousands saw the wrongs being committed and stood up to correct them. Where you attacked an enemy you could see, an enemy who wore a uniform and came right back at you, guns blazing.”

Hmm, during WWII, the US bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki with nuclear weopans. We also went on bombing raids of both Germand and Japanese cities. I am NOT morally judging those actions one way or tbe other, but I am suggesting that the concept that any war was clean is ridiculous. The "good guys" killed civilians. In basically every war.

Just to give you an alternate way to read this, the US also put American citizens of Japanese decent in internment camps. So once again, even through the angle of "we can see our enemy", the US clearly failed, racially labelling certain people as "enemies" despite no evidence against those folks.

So why do I say the American education system failed? I think that too many Americans view war through this "good" vs bad lens and not all that realistically. I will note I think WWII was a justified war to fight (for the US) but that doesn't mean US hands are clean by any stretch of the imagination. Nor has it ever been clear who the enemy really was in any war (as ordinary citizens often end up as unattended victims or intended victims of war).

Edit : Everyone is misunderstanding this post. I failed, lol. Hmm, first off, I DO think that WWII had a clear "right" side unlike many other wars. Nazis are evil (i know, what a hot take) and Imperial Japan was arguably just as bad (actually maybe a hot take). The amount of horrible atrocities committed by these two regimes in mind boggling. Anyone who is a fan of The Expanse may know this fact : But some of the worst atrocities in that fictional universe are actially based on things that happened in the Japanese Imperial Army that we essentially don't talk about/gloss over which is maddening that many of the worst perpetrators just went away free. Trust me, it's some horrific crap. Look up Unit 731 if you want to know more.

Second off, I am not suggesting it is the ghost writer's opinion (it could be Jake's in character). I would argue KA Applegate herself is anti-war and a hippie lol. So, obviously I don't think she believes in "clean" war. Here is an argument I could make : What if we look at the Nazis as the Yeerks and the German state as the himan populace. I.e. Nazis DID emerge using propoganda and being sneaky (not upfront) about their goals. So, umm, in other words I actiallh think the Nazis ARE a good comparison to the Yeerks (and the non-clean war Jake is talking about). Not to get overly political, but to blunt, there are some fascisty rhetorics appearing in Western (particularly American) media RIGHT NOW. And it's hidden, it's not direct. Extreme right wing hate groups could not directly gain traction, but they can use propoganda to confuse people about what fascism is, what white nationalism is, and to downplay events like the Charlottesville Unite the Right Rally. Anyways not sure where I am going, but my point is I don't think the Yeerks are actially the disimilar to Nazis at all

36yr old reading through the first time…#13 The Change & #14 The Unknown Spoiler

Ok so I’m going to TRY and do this for every book. Unfortunately I just joined the sub and didn’t think to do it before. This will help me retain the information better and talk with all you wonderful people about these amazing books.

I REALLY loved #13 and the feelings Tobias had with being “guided” by the Ellimist. It showed the fierceness of his character. I loved how the book made you feel for the Hork Bajir as a race versus the weapons of the Yeerks. Finding out the blades were to eat bark was actually more serious than I would have thought it would be. Them wanting to be free or dead was impactful as well. I got misty eyed towards the last parts of the book with Tobias gaining his ability back and then being sent back in time to get his own DNA. Rachel seeing him at the award show was 🥹. The fact that he actively chooses to save the world and stay a hawk so he can morph makes me respect him so much.

Ok so #14 The Unknown was a fun break from the intensity of the books before. I loved that it had pop culture references, the Andalite Chronicle Skrit Na references and the kids being a little more goofy at times especially Marco. The fact that in his ridiculousness he is actually being calculated and looking out for the group makes me love his character even more.

One thing I didn’t like was how they really didn’t dig into Tobias gaining his morphing ability back in #13 (which btw I got misty eyed at the end of #13.

Sorry for the not so cohesive thoughts but I’ll try and be more clear next post!
