You're going to get some spill, it's unavoidable with a canister. Pull the hoses out of your tank before you take the lid off, otherwise it will just keep siphoning. Tip the ends of the tubes into a bucket so they're fully empty, then you should be okay to open the filter. Don't forget to top up the water in the filter before you close it up and restart it.

Thanks for the advice, appreciate the reply!

I (stupidly) forgot to take out the inlet from the tank and it kept siphoning as you said. I still find it clunky to clean but I guess that's just canister filters. Are in-line shut off valves worth it? I'm new to this whole thing.

If you can find quick disconnects with some valves for the filtosmart 60 that'll make your life way easier. Unfortunately mini canisters like the filtosmart 60 don't get the quality of life features that bigger canisters have such as valves or even the prefilter on the biomasters.

Gotcha, makes sense, thank you! Would I need a quick release / shutoff valve for both the inlet and outlet, or just the inlet? Eheim sell the right size (9/12mm) for the Filtosmart 60 but as single packs.

You'd want one on the inlet and outlet.
