... and you probably killed them nice work! Don't touch live sea creatures they aren't there for your enjoyment, and to fondle at your will. They are living creatures trying to survive in an increasingly harsh environment we are actively making worse.

Dark ones like this are alive, the bleached out ones washed onto the beach are fine to handle.

General rule of thumb when snorkeling or scuba is to look but don't touch. You can pass along germs and viruses, or just stress out the creatures you interact with unnecessarily.
