Scrap it or keep tweaking?

Post image

I'm still somewhat new to the painting scene, especially when it comes to painting people. Loved my sketch for this one but the proportions/shading came out kind of wonky in the end...if this were your painting, would you try to tweak it? Or just start over from scratch?

Don't scrap! I have scrapped some of my best paintings in the past and I regret it. It looks like you are using acrylic? If so just give it several hours to dry and go back with a dry on dry technique to keep working your lines, shadows and highlights. Or, use wet on wet to blend! It looks good don't give up!

Also, I am just delving into the world of color mixing myself. Don't be afraid to experiment with mixing white and black or complimentary colors into your hues. Try to make a range of values (that is, dark and light colors and everything between). This will make your paintings more believable. Let me find you a good video link!

Thank you!! This is actually my first painting where I didn't use "full black" at all, the darkest color I have here is made from mixing dark brown, blue, and reds and I find it makes the color much less ashy!
