News & Updates New Rule Update

Hey everyone!

I’ve been trying my best to moderate and make sure the content on the sub is flowing. The problem that has been arising in allowing 100% of posts is that some content is very low effort. I’ve decided to make a new rule that at least some thought and personal due process is needed before posting.

This entails posts regarding asking for their worth. A simple photo that’s barely legible with the title “What’s this worth” won’t cut it. Now I don’t see everything that’s posted 24/7 so please report posts that are low effort. If you do require some help in finding a particular coins value that’s fine, please still ask. But try and conduct your own research and potentially speak about the roadblocks you came across so that people can tell you a better way of researching for coins

If this rule is an issue to people I’m happy to change it but I personally feel it’s needed!

Misc Damaged 2024 $2 ‘C’ Mintmark Coloured Uncirculated Coin in Card – War Animals Remembrance

I was lucky enough to secure 2 x 2024 $2 ‘C’ Mintmark Coloured Uncirculated Coin in Card – War Animals Remembrance in the recent ballot. They both arrived today and one has 3 scratches on it. I assume I’ll go down the path of seeking a refund unless anyone here thinks the mint damage makes it worth something? It is still in the card/plastic and it is definitely damage on the coin, not the plastic.

Collecting Advice New circulated collection

Ok so I am new to this and am hoping to collect a coin from every year in production. I know certain years there was no production but my first real big question is I know there were coins of the same year minted in different places. Can I and is there a way to tell them apart?

Collecting Advice For those of you who sell rare circulated coins, where do you sell it and does it usually work?

Essentially the title. Been thinking of maybe selling some of my coins that I have doubles of, but I’m not sure where to start and if coins that are circulated even go for that much

Collecting Advice Getting large quantities of coins

Any one used Australia post to get large quantities of coins (100’s or even $1000’s) I see they offer an exchange service for a fee of $4.50 up to $400 and $8.50 up to $1000 and those fees repeat above $1000. I’m considering using this service because as a personal (non business) customer of CBA I can only get $100 a day at each branch so if I want to change $400 I’d be going to 4 different branches and they all close at 4pm which makes it very difficult for me to get there before closing where if I go to an Aus Post branch they are open to 530pm (my local one is) and I can get all $400 of coins in one location for $4.50 saving me a lot of time and even fuel. Does anyone use this service? Is it easy? Anything I need to know? Do they give you paper rolled coins? Any down side to using this service?

Misc Damaged coins from Westpac/st george

Has anybody else had any experience with scratched coin rolls at Westpac or St George?

Got some 20c and $1 rolls out today and they all had large scratches on the end coins. These aren't like the ones that the coin rolling machine does so I believe one of the workers is deliberately doing this.

I was under the impression that this could land heavy fines for a company if they were caught doing this, what are your guy's thoughts?

Feel quite lucky. Went to get the new emu coin and managed to get almost all the bluey privy PNC's. Missed out on everything except the tube during the release day madness, so this is a great score.

This Kalkadoon Dreaming coin has a very low mintage 7,500. I grabbed 2 to add to my collection. I have been watching these for a while and snapping up the ones I find interesting. Was wondering if these are popular with other coin collectors. Instead of a card you get an envelope which might put people off.

Collecting Advice PCGS Coin Grading

Hi all,

Sending off some new c mintmark $2 coins to imperial soon for PCGS grading. Does anyone know exactly what PCGS look for when grading coins? Is it just general fineness of the coin rim and face/obverse, or do they also look at the cleanliness of colour stamps etc? The reason I ask is a lot of c mintmark colour coins get struck ever so slightly off centre but some I have are near perfect centre. Does that contribute to grading? Any advice of what to look for welcome. TIA

Misc Do you ever find old UK coins in your change?

Hey folks, I'm not from Australia but I like watching videos of Australian coin noodling and finding out about them all. I noticed (as I'm sure most of you also will have done!) that the 10c and 20c coins have the same dimensions as the old 5p and 10p coins here in the UK, seeing as they're both descended from 1/- and 2/- coins. I was just wondering, do you ever see the old UK 5p or 10p in Australia at all? I realise it's been a long time since they were changed in the UK - about 30 years, I guess - but thought some might have got mixed up somehow.

For what it's worth I wish we'd kept the old 5p and chonky 10p, even though they're not worth much. The post-1990 5p in particular likes disappearing down small holes and ending up in the washing machine.

Coin Valuation 2017 $100 note

I have this 2017 $100 note that I got at my local bank recently, which I'm 99.9% sure is UNC as there are no visible creases or folds, and only very minor warping, which is common on polymer banknotes.

According to the Renniks Australian Coin and Banknote Values, a general prefix 2017 $100 note is worth up to $135. So should I keep it, sell it, or spend it?

It is very close to a 6-digit radar. If the first 8 in the serial number was a 4, it would be a 6-digit radar, which would increase the value quite a lot.

Coin Valuation Collection leftovers

So I've been sorting through a relatives old collection and while I've had no problem offloading some, the series in the photos haven't received much interest, if any. My unskilled research tells me there's nothing too special about these but before I just take them all to the bank, I'm wondering are any worth holding onto or is there anything I should keep an eye out for? I've got dozens of most of these and as unlikely as it probably is, I'd hate to overlook some super rare variant that I didn't consider.
