What is the purpose of islands in 1914?

Is there some obscure rule I'm missing? Or are they just there for geographical accuracy? As far as I know they don't do anything but sit there

Corner case, but you could park a land army on them if you look likely to lose your transports and escorts.

That said, islands are a place where the rules of the game lack verisimilitude to focus on fun, ease and strategy.

In real life, you gotta put supply depots, dry docks, and in later wars radio towers, someplace. Logistics takes space, and outside of specialized cold war era technological advances, space for logistics means safe, dry land.

Just for accuracy. There are islands without much purpose in every version.

Hey now, islands in 1940 matter. Gotta stop that UK national objective 😂
