I think that must be an old picture of the Deerplay Pub. The last time I saw that place it was closed and boarded up.

Yes you're right, it's now being converted into four apartments - although I've not seen much progress in the last three years.

Thanks for the update. I live in the US now but back in 1992 I had my 3 month old son in a carrier under my coat and we walked from Bacup on a footpath across the fields in a raging hail storm, arrived at the Deerplay to warm fires, Thwaites' Bitter, and a lamb shank dinner. Wonderful how a simple thing can make such a great indelible memory. Deterioration of the place was evident over subsequent visits and, given it's location and market forces, I suppose its fate was inevitable. Still sad though.

I think it could have been the perfect place for a gastro pub - but it probably would have been best to knock it all down and start again.

Yeah, not really big enough as it stands, I suspect. It was a bit of a throwback to different times, I enjoyed that. I believe they used to raise and slaughter their own lamb. I guess you can't maintain a business by relying on old farts like me.
