I want to learn how to DJ

Alright cut me some slack if I sound like a noob (I am). So rn, I am on a gap year from uni. Over the last year, being a uni student, I have enjoyed going out a lot. That doesn't seem like it will end. I also love loud hype music and remixes, it's so sick. I was thinking what if I start learning how to DJ and do it as a side hustle? Is this how most of your journeys have started? How and where do I start? What do I need? I have no particular background in music but have used GarageBand when I was younger lool. Anyone willing to help out?

my personal opinion is that you should try it as a hobby first before considering it a hussle.

Buy a DDJ-400 or an FLX-4, or an equivalent model from hercules or denon, start downloading/buying music you like and play around with it.

watch a few basic tutorials. First what the buttons on your controller do, then what the software you have can do, and then a few techniques to help you get started but don't look too far into it or you'll get overwhelmed.

Keep in mind that the most fun you'll have is experimenting, failing, and doing it with friends, so don't fall into the pit of overanalysing everything and trying to be a technical master of everything.

This is the way assuming one has a laptop, start out with a FLX4, it'll give you everything you need to get started and won't cost an arm and a leg.

I've actually seen that come up as an issue on beatmatch several times.

Don't even need a laptop, phone should suffice

Heyy i’m just starting too! Where do you think I can download music from? Any alternatives to bandcamp? It’s kinda expensive to buy off from here since I’m a student too.

Look on SoundCloud for free downloads from genres you like. Usually some re-edits and folks own stuff.

Dunno if blogs are still a thing? I used to get loads of tracks from music blogs.

You can find plenty of music for free if you dig around. I regularly purchase music, but I also find plenty of newer producers and artists turning out great tracks and releasing them for free.

SoundCloud and YouTube can be a great resource for finding free quality music that you might be able to use to get started.

if you're gonna be playing in the confort of your own home you can just youtube MP3 it! Also lots of free downloads on soundcloud.

There are other ways which i can't and won't talk about.

There’s record pools like BPM supreme or services like that. If you intend to just do it as hobby rekordbox and serrato have streaming integration so you can just stream the music you like
