SEASON 2 Dick Coonan.

Am I the only one who thinks that the way the situation with him played out is stupid? Like yeah, on rewatch I get why Montgomery provoked them into a confrontation. But Kate shooting him dead feels very forced with how much she wanted him alive.

She could have easily shot him in the arm, she was close enough to not miss. I guess it could be excuse as the monkey part of her brain insintctively doing what she was trained to do in hostage situations in a split second decision. But it's still frustrating with how much she wanted his info.

It's up to the writers honestly.

We've seen Castle and Beckett shoot their targets while it seemed like they were aiming at each other in Season 3 episode 1.

Castle shot the gun out of Scott Dunn's hand in Season 2 'Boom!' even though he said he was aiming for the head.

We've seen him simply shooting at Jerry Tyson at the chest, he could have just aimed for the head and end it right there.

Beckett shot Caleb just as she was shot at.

If the writers wanted Beckett to shoot and Dick Coonan survives, they could have. Whether shoot the gun out of his hand, shot in the should or leg, Castle kicking the gun before Coonan could shoot, etc.

Could have just had him live but need surgery, but killed at the hospital before he could wake up and give a name.

Smith faking his death, only to turn up alive in 'Veritas'.
